JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing therapeutic and educational support to breastfeeding mothers and infants in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role involves the use of evidence-based practice to educate patients and families on the benefits of breastfeeding and provide ongoing support to sustain breastfeeding.

  • Provide hands-on patient care and teaching at the bedside
  • Research current lactation theories and apply evidence-based feeding plans to address individual feeding issues
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop feeding plans for infants from normal to complex neonates
  • Participate in performance improvement and clinical research projects to promote evidence-based lactation services
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate standards of practice, guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols for lactation services
  • Identify and analyze systemic barriers to care and develop plans to resolve these barriers
  • Attend patient care conferences and interdisciplinary rounds
  • Evaluate results of care and revise plans accordingly
  • Deliver patient education resources and programs and coach, teach and support breastfeeding mothers using evidence-based practice
  • Act as a professional leader and development role model in professionalism, communication, and ethical decision-making

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a minimum of Associate degree (BSN preferred)
  • Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Florida with minimum 2+ years Obstetrics nursing experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS Provider) and NRP certification required
  • Certification as a Lactation Consultant through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC) or certification as a CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) or CBC (Certified Breastfeeding Counselor) required
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Creole preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows
