Any RN hired or transferred into this position , must complete a BSN degree within4 years of hire or transfer date.Job DescriptionJob Summary The Certified Surgical Technologist functions under the direct supervision of the Director Surgical Services or a Perioperative Registered Nurse. Responsible for giving direct and indirect patient care within the area of assignment pursuant to established standards of care of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. Demonstrates knowledge of patient population specific to that department. (Patient population is defined in each department's Scope of Practice.)Qualifications Education: Graduate from an accredited school of Surgical Technology preferred with current certification required. Training: Individualized preceptor training two to three months or upon completion of department orientation skills checklist to satisfaction of Director. CPR Provider C required within 30 days of hire. Experience: None required. Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred. Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have comprehensive knowledge of principles of asepsis, sterile technique, and general surgical procedures. More advanced skills as experience permits. Familiarity with organization, function, and policies and procedures of the Hospital as they relate to Patient Services and Surgical Services. Successful completion of orientation skills checklist within three months.Performance Requirements Responsibility For: The Certified Surgical Technologist acts as a scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure. Has an understanding of the procedures being performed and constantly maintains the sterile field. Physical Demands: Good physical and mental health necessary. Visual, auditory, and speech acuity required. Manual dexterity for handling delicate surgical instrumentation. Must stand for extended periods (4-6 hours) unassisted and without breaks. Must have strength in arms and shoulders to hold retractors for long periods in uncomfortable positions. On feet for major portion of the day; much pulling, pushing, and lifting required. Works in surgical suites, which are well-lighted, heated, and ventilated; some exposure to disagreeable conditions. May come in contact with hazardous health conditions; however, if proper procedure is followed no harm should come to employee. Special Demands: Reflects the mission, philosophy, core values, and customer service plan of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in action and attitude. Willingness to work with realization that errors and incompetence may have serious consequences for patients. Competency, tact, and patience are necessary when communicating with patients, families, physicians, and other personnel. Utilizes initiative and judgment in adapting or devising techniques and procedures to meet the needs of the department. Maintains confidentiality. May be required to work rotating shifts and a reasonable amount of overtime. Must be able to take call on a rotating basis. Must return to work in no more than 20 minutes of notification of the emergency procedure to be done.
