Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center seeks an experienced, Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist, Clinical Specialist to join our well-established oncology physician group practice in Baton Rouge, LA.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBPCC) is a freestanding, not-for-profit oncology practice based in the capital city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Treating approximately 2,200 patients annually, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is Louisiana's leading cancer care organization caring for more patients each year than any other facility in the region. For over 50 years, Mary Bird Cancer Center has delivered on our mission of compassion and excellence to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through expert treatment, compassionate care, early detection, research, and education. The practice offers Hematology/Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, and Clinical Trials & Research programs.

About the Role

The Oncology Pharmacist, Clinical Specialist, is responsible for the provision of pharmacy services to the practice and clinical research department, including the preparation, compounding, and dispensing of investigational products in compliance with FDA and established federal, state, and local regulations and participation in treatment regimen review for standardization.

Responsibilities/Requirements
  • Demonstrates the ability to build a strong team with seamless processes that support clinical trial needs and safe practices and regimen review for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
  • Promotes positive working relationships across departments and locations; reinforces achievement of goals and objectives of the Clinical Research Program and Mary Bird Cancer Center.
  • Maintains organizational awareness and seeks stakeholder participation and engagement in the design, function, and performance of the Center's pharmacy programs.
  • Participates in the planning of clinical research protocols by providing input on pharmaceutical services, assessment of participant needs, and determination of appropriate services for each clinical research trial.
  • Ensures the monitoring and evaluation of the quality and appropriateness of services provided to human subjects by the Pharmacy in conjunction with Medical Staff.
  • Participates in study meetings to provide drug information regarding therapeutic and medical problems or questions and to ensure the appropriate delivery of investigational drugs.
  • Documents monitoring, evaluation, and problem-solving activity for the Pharmacy and investigational drug delivery at the institution.
  • Acts as a liaison between the patient and the physicians, clinical research staff, medical records personnel, and the business office.
  • Participates in the build-out/review of treatment protocols in the system pending the outcome of the Mary Bird Perkins Regimen Review Committee.
  • Works collaboratively with Human Resources to select, onboard, and train pharmacy and mixing team members of the highest quality; supervises and orients all staff to center policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the professional development of the pharmacy team on new treatment guidelines and Research protocols. Develops skills and abilities of staff as needed by scheduling in-services, courses, or workshops to address identified areas across all facilities.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures specific to pharmacy research services that assure compliance with legal, regulatory, or accreditation requirements.
  • Participates in treatment protocol review for the practice to ensure accuracy in the EMR system while providing in-services to the pharmacy team on new treatment regimens/drug indications.
  • Collaboratively works with the Quality Program team to develop and implement the organization's quality improvement program following the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Maintains organizational awareness and seeks stakeholder participation and engagement in the design, function, and performance of the Center's pharmacy programs.
Education/Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an Accredited Pharmacy Program
  • PharmD Preferred
  • BCOP Certification - Board Certified Oncology Pharmacy, Preferred
  • Active license in the State of Louisiana or Eligible for Licensure in Louisiana.
Experience:
  • 4 - 5 years of experience as a Pharmacist.
  • Oncology Experience Required.
  • Research Experience Preferred.
  • Management Experience Preferred.
Specialized Knowledge:
  • Disease states, therapeutic use of drugs, clinically significant drug interactions, and adverse drug reactions and their interrelatedness.
  • Knowledge of drug names, strengths, dosage forms, generic equivalent, and storage requirements.
  • Basic pharmacy compounding and dispensing.
  • Inventory control procedures and practices.
  • State laws and regulations regarding the practice of pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to dispensary and infusion area.
  • Knowledge of USP 797/800 clean room standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of HIPAA, OSHA, and other regulatory policies and requirements.
