Costumes First Hand

Sight & Sound Films is seeking a First Hand to work within our costume team. The First Hand will support the Draper and the Films Costume Designer and Assistant Costume Designer in the preparation and construction of costumes for the next Sight & Sound Films production. The length of employment for this position is expected to be approximately 8 to 9 months.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Cut, sew, fit, and alter all built or purchased costumes as directed by Draper and Assistant Costume Designer.
• Collaborate with designer team to achieve desired look for all clothing elements.
• Work to achieve costume build timeline goals, work hand in hand with Draper and Wardrobe Supervisor to assess workload; and help support budgetary requirements.
• Assist in repair of rented or stock costumes and complete hand and finish work as needed to support the stitchers.
• Advise stitchers and craftsmen on laundry and fabric care needs.
• Support wardrobe team on set.

• Demonstrated proficiency in construction techniques for the creation of mockups and costumes.
• Proven expert knowledge and experience in creating a variety of costume time periods and construction techniques, with the ability to guide a team of stitchers.
• Tailoring and alterations experience helpful, with excellence in garment construction problem solving.
• Established expert knowledge of fabric types, fitting, and altering techniques, and the ability to guide a team in those skillsets.
