Title: Data Management Technician

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Purpose:Provide accurate and reliable data management services for the Division of Environmental Health as a member of the Data Management Unit in the Environmental Epidemiology and Analytics (EEA) Section. This person is responsible for maintaining reliable spreadsheets and databases used to organize and validate datasets for a variety of public health needs. The Data Management Technician position will gather and process data from multiple sources and provide content for reports and other documents. Will work independently on data organization and processing tasks to ensure the needs of the various teams are met. The Data Management Technician will provide Section staff with technical support for data management tasks and help identify new information organization solutions for the Environmental Data Management Unit and Environmental Epidemiology and Analytics Section.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Data Compilation: Efficiently gather data from various sources, including laboratory results, reports, and Unit, Section, and Division activities.
  • Data Processing and Quality Assurance: Process data while ensuring accuracy and reliability through quality assurance and control measures. Standardize tables and database content for consistency.
  • Metadata Management: Develop and maintain metadata for datasets created or modified by the Section, enhancing data organization and accessibility.
  • Spreadsheet and Database Maintenance: Assist with maintaining and using spreadsheets and databases to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and security.
  • Data Management Solution Support: Assist Project Managers in creating stable and reliable solutions for tracking, compiling, analyzing, and maintaining datasets.
  • Product Development: Assist in the creation of reports, presentations, educational content, and various deliverables aligned with organizational aims. Work closely with analysts and unit staff to develop forms, report templates, and interface elements for efficient data entry and report generation.
  • Data Stream Monitoring and Maintenance: Proactively monitor long-term data streams to ensure timeliness and accuracy. Implement strategies to address data anomalies, ensuring integrity and reliability.
  • Data Visualization: Assist in producing charts, graphs, and data-driven content to enhance visual representation of data insights.
  • Survey and Tool Design: Contribute to designing surveys, outreach materials, and data acquisition tools to support research initiatives and data collection efforts.
  • Technical Support: Provide support for data processing and product usage, assisting users with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.
  • Documentation and Training: Develop technical guides and training materials for data product usage, ensuring effective knowledge transfer and user adoption.
  • Research and Innovation: Research and suggest new data products, services, and protocols to improve data management practices and organizational capabilities.
  • Project Support: Provide additional support to the section and department as needed, including data processing for special projects and collaboration with other State Departments.
  • Adaptability and Flexibility: Undertake all assigned duties with adaptability and flexibility, responding effectively to changing priorities and organizational needs.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with team members, stakeholders, and external partners to achieve common goals and deliver high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional certifications or experience demonstrating proficiency in the relevant knowledge and skills are highly desired. A Bachelor of Science degree in health, IT, or environmental science is preferred.

Experience: One year of experience performing administrative support activities is required; two or more years of experience working with large datasets is preferred.

  • Thorough understanding of data handling and management in MS Excel, SQL databases, and Microsoft Dynamics
  • Knowledge of Excel pivot tables and power queries.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent data quality control skills.
  • Willing to work with subject area experts to support data and reporting needs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Physical effort will be typical of an office position using a computer for 95% of daily work time. Requires occasional travel within the State. Less occasionally, travel may be required outside the State. There may be times when work outside of regular hours is necessary for the completion of a project.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: The function of the Division of Environmental Health is to act as a resource for the evaluation of the effects of the environment on health. The Environmental Data Management Unit within the Division's Environmental Epidemiology and Analytics Section supports the building and maintenance of data management and GIS resources for use across the Division.
