In-house procedures include Hematology, Coagulation, Serology, Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis, Clinical Microscopy, Phlebotomy and Blood Bank.Performs complex analytical tests or procedures, recognizes deviation from expected results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precisionRecognizes factors that affect measurements and results, analyzes QC data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.Recognizes abnormal test results and answers inquiries about them, the methodology, specificity and sensitivity; answers questions about specific factors that can influence test resultsAnalyzes blood cells by counting and identifying cells using microscopic techniques and proceduresPrepares blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions by conducting blood group type, and compatibility tests with corresponding quality control measuresEnsures operation of analyzers and other lab equipment byCalibration and Quality Control ProceduresCompleting preventive maintenance requirementsFollowing manufacturer's instructions for all instrumentsTroubleshooting malfunctions, repairing if possible, and calls for repairs from manufacturer as neededMaintaining equipment inventoriesEvaluating new equipment and techniquesConserves laboratory resources by using only the equipment and supplies needed to accomplish quality resultsProvides medical technology information by answering questions and requests to patients, physicians, and ancillary departmentsPrepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing informationMaintains inter- and intradepartmental work flow by fostering a spirit of cooperationProtects patients and employees by adhering to infection control and hazardous waste policies and protocolsReports critical/panic results to attending physician and/or nurseMaintains quality assurance of the Laboratory by performing proficiency testingPerforms clerical duties associated with supporting the laboratoryAdheres to all hospital and departmental policies and proceduresAttend and participate in in-service education program, on-the-job training programs, etc. as directed or scheduledPerforms other duties as assignedSkills:Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staffBasic computer skillsProfessional, friendly attitudeExcellent bedside mannerIn-depth knowledge of health and safety guidelines and proceduresWorking knowledge of healthcare laws and regulationsTeam player with excellent communication and interpersonal skillsResponsible and compassionateOutstanding organizational and multi-tasking skillsExcellent problem-solving skillsAbility to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer serviceAbility to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practicesPhysical Requirements:The Medical Laboratory Technologist must have the ability to move around freely, walk and stand for long periods of time; use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired; use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bend or twist their body; understand the speech of another person and speak clearly so listeners can understand; and see details of objects that are less than a few feet away and at a distance. A minimal amount of lifting is required.
