Pay

This position is an exempt position at pay grade 204.

Attendance

Non-rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; must be available to work additional hours as needed.

Overview

The WIC nutritionist performs program eligibility and nutritional assessment for individual clients by providing nutritional planning, determination of supplemental food needs and provision of breastfeeding supplies. Nutritionists conduct child development and immunization checks, health screenings and referrals. The WIC program nutritionists provide individual and group education in nutrition, breastfeeding, and health issues. Nutritionists attend special events, like health fairs, to raise public awareness about the program.

Responsibilities

• Oversees the efficiency of daily clinic operations for certifications and classes, maintain congenial and respectful relations with staff, children, families, and community, monitor the efficiency of the clinic flow and staffing.

• Nutritionists educate, document, approve and counsel parents about breastfeeding and/or formulas and provide referrals for health care providers according to the criteria on the formula.

• Following the state mandated approval system for high-risk infant and children's nutrition needs with formulas

• Nutritionists are expected to be able to provide nutritional education with excellent customer service for all WIC clients.

• Nutritionists will review plans with clients and utilize customer service skills to facilitate compliance with WIC program requirements.

• Develops, evaluates, and uses educational materials as an aid in nutrition education including the preparation of the annual Nutrition Education/Outreach Plan.

• Interprets, evaluates, and utilizes pertinent current health topics related to nutrition care for women, children, and infants for our WIC Program clients.

• Distributes handouts for participants as needed.

• Creates a bulletin board for the waiting area or self-paced lessons.

• Perform program eligibility and nutritional assessment for individual clients within the WIC program and ensure client understanding of nutrition eligibility requirements.

• Providing WIC approved materials to promote healthy pregnancy, health and well-being for families, breastfeeding benefits for the mothers and babies in our community.

• Giving support and referrals to the families in our community.

• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Requires bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a Nutrition related field or a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 24 hours of nutrition education credits

• No experience required

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating

Application review and the City may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
