Permit Technician

POSITION SUMMARY: Under direction, performs a variety of specialized administrative and clerical functions for the Building Division of the Department of Development.

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of four (4) years of high school or equivalent, supplemented by more than one (1) year of professional experience in office management and customer relations in a fast-paced work environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license.

Must possess ICC Permit Technician Certification or obtain such certification within 18 months of becoming employed.

DUTIES: Processes permit applications, types correspondence, performs file maintenance, performs data entry, answers phones, responds to the general public, receives and reviews building applications for completeness, inputs and retrieves data/information from building permit software programs, calculates and/or verifies square footage, routes and tracks drawings, maps, plans, and applications, notifies public of permit status, calculates and collects proper fees, issues necessary permits.

Receives and responds to questions, inquiries and requests from the general public, screens office visitors and telephone callers, provides information on assigned operations and activities, assists applicants in completing building permit applications and associated forms, accepts applications and payments; explains and provides information regarding building codes, regulations, and processes, refers callers to appropriate staff for further assistance.

Designs a variety of forms to facilitate the permit process and the functions of the building department, maintains accurate and up-to-date files and records for the building division, monitors various logs, accounts and files for current and accurate information.

May perform the duties of other department personnel as needed or assigned. Maintains contact with County personnel/departments, the general public, and various government agencies/officials in order to obtain or disseminate information related to the essential position functions.

Must maintain all required licensures and certifications. 

Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

Demonstrates regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
