Position Overview
The primary function of the Surgical Technologist is as a “scrub technologist” in the surgical suite and other clinical areas. The surgical technologist, under the guidance of the physician and registered nurse, is responsible for implementation of AST Standards which provide for safe and effective techniques and processes for quality patient care. The surgical technologist must possess strong interpersonal skills and a surgical conscience. The Surgical Technologist helps in the preparation of the room before surgery. He/She is responsible for all items required for their surgical table, including all required instrumentation and sutures.
Education:
High school graduate or equivalent required. Graduate of anaccredited Surgical Technologist program required.
License:
N/A
Certification:
Current Surgical Technologist Certification preferred.
Must complete BCLS certification by the end of positionorientation. Must maintain current BCLS certification.
Experience:
Prior experience as a SurgicalTechnologist preferred.
Reports to:
OR Lead Coordinator and Patient Care Manager.
Supervises:
None.
Physical Demands:
Work involves using many physical motions in performing dailywork activities. Work is moderatelyactive: involves standing with frequent requirements to move about theoffice, move about the facility, and to travel to another facility withinthe SRHS service area. Work involvesexerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull,or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Employee is responsible for safely moving,lifting and handling all supplies, equipment and patients, with assistance.Safe lifting practice is expected in all areas of job performance andemployees are responsible to request help whenever needed, regardless of theweight, using available assistance, i.e., lifting devices or additionalstaff.
Work is subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum and tissues,which may carry the hazard of infectious disease. Work involves using repetitive motions:substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers while operatingstandard office equipment such as computer keyboard.
Work involves being able to perceive the nature of sound atnormal speaking levels with or without correction; the ability to make finediscriminations in sound. Work requires close visual and acuity and theability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shiftgaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms/printed material that arecloser to compare data at close vision.
Must beable to be active for extended periods of time without experiencing unduefatigue. Must be able to work schedulesassigned with the understanding that changes may be instituted according tothe needs of the hospital for off days, shifts or weekends.
Mental Demands:
Mustdemonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decision makingabilities. Must demonstrate superiorcommunication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information inperson and by telephone. Mustdemonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Must possess emotional stability conduciveto dealing with high stress levels.Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task incomplex situations is required. Must have the ability to maintaincollaborative and respectful working relationships throughout SRHS and other organizations.
Special Demands:
Must possess superior customerservice skills and professional etiquette.Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (mustbe keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax,etc.). Must have intermediate knowledgeof MS Outlook and Word.
Must be able to demonstrateappropriate clinical judgment based on approved scope of practice and applyappropriate professional skills to a patient population of all ages. Must possesses a thorough knowledge ofAST process standards.
Must have a valid driver license asjob requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area with the employee providinghis/her own transportation.
