General Summary of the Position:

Responsible forlaying and joining concrete, plastic, or cast-iron pipe for drains, sewers, and water mains. The pipe layer is responsible for installing underground pipes, which vary in size (6 to 108) and type (RCP, PVC, Ductile Iron, Steel, etc.) for heavy civil construction utilities projects. This includes rigging pipe for hoisting, setting pipe to grade and affixing the pipe joint. Prepare and grade the trenches either manually or by communicating with onsite equipment operators. The Pipe Layer position requires manual labor as well as assisting other crew members as necessary with hands-on work.

  • Work cooperatively with the crew to accomplish tasks.
  • Lay and join pipe for drains, sewer, and water lines rigging pipe, setting pipe, and affixing pipe to joints.
  • Maintain tools and equipment so that they are kept in good working order and are safe for use.
  • Participate in training and other forms of development to strengthen technical, safety and other skills.
  • Operate construction equipment as required.
  • Consistently monitor and maintain compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment to include equipment operated.
  • Perform a variety of general labor tasks as required for the job.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of applicable safety precautions.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate workflow with production operator.
  • Ability to work under general supervision according to work schedule.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
  • Knowledge of and ability to determine appropriate grades.
  • Ability to figure grade & read plans.

Required Education, Training and Experience:

  • Must have at least 3 yearsexperience as a pipelayer
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) strongly preferred.
  • Valid appropriate state drivers license (general operator license) required; Class A or B CDL strongly preferred.
  • OSHA 10 Certification is preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object.
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
  • Noise level is generally loud.
  • Excellent stamina is required.

Experience Levels:

  • Level C Entry level pipelayer with 3-5 years experience.
  • Level B Mid level pipelayer with 5-8 years experience.
  • Level A Senior level pipelayer with 8+ years experience.
