The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Veterinarian

under the general supervision of the Shelter Manager, shall provide involves planning, supervising and participating in medical diagnosis, treatment, and care and evaluation of all animals sheltered by the Animal Care and Control (AC&C) Division. Duties include: emergency medical care of injured or sick animals on a twenty-four hour, seven-day-a-week basis; administering a disease prevention program through preventative inoculation and shelter sanitation; and responsibility for euthanasia of unwanted animals. An individual has considerable latitude for the exercise of independent of judgment and initiative in attaining program goals and in rendering medical treatment. Functions as the Departmental Veterinarian. Work is subject to periodic review through conferences, inspections and appraisal of operations and accomplishments of the unit.

Duties include:

Plans, supervises, and participates in individual medical exams of all animals handled by the Department.

Provide training and education for AC&C staff on proper medical techniques & procedures, proper care, and analyzing health issues.

Oversee Animal health programs at AC&C to provide best possible care to animals entering & exiting while maintaining population control.

Ensure animals are cared for in accordance with AC&C standards. Maintain clean & sanitary environment at all times.

Ensure citizen complaints about health of animals are processed in rapid & professional manner within City & Mecklenburg County policies and all applicable laws and standards.

Conducts periodic audits of euthanasia records to ensure Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) accountability standards are maintained. Keep completed medical and drug records required by Drug Enforcement Agency.

Supervise disease prevention. Administers a disease prevention program by designing an inoculation regime and setting standards for shelter sanitation and disinfecting.

Provide emergency services to incoming animals in conjunction with Vet Techs.

Assist in CMPD rabies vaccination programs occurring every second Saturday of the month, 7:00am to 12:00pm at AC&C with five onsite hours.

Attend community events to promote animals, AC&C programs, and provide advice to public about proper care of animals.

Directs the purchase, receipt, storage, and inventory of medical equipment and supplies; is responsible for maintaining precise records on all drug usage, especially the accountability for the euthanizing solution.

Supervises the veterinary technicians and front counter staff. Coordinate with Vet Techs supervisor to assist with day-to-day duties.

Other duties as assigned.
