Job Description

The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Specialist plans, coordinates, develops and executes ergonomics operations and safety training that maximizes employee wellbeing, preserves organizational resources, and promotes regulatory compliance for all employees. The HSE Specialist applies expertise in human factors, ergonomics, and user-centered design principles to provide recommendations for solutions as it relates to workstation setups, furniture, peripherals, and special equipment that meets the needs of our users while minimizing the risk of human error and injury.

Essential Functions, Roles, and Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive human factors and ergonomic evaluations of work environments to identify design flaws, usability issues, and potential safety hazards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including staff, engineers, and researchers to integrate human factors and ergonomic considerations throughout all areas of coverage.
  • Use technology to provide state of the art risk assessment and benchmarking tools.
  • Plan and execute user research studies, usability tests, and field observations to gather insights into user behaviors, preferences, and needs.
  • Analyze data from user research studies and usability tests to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement in equipment functionality.
  • Deliver EHS programs to train employees in work site safety practices by promoting and leading to a site culture where safety is engrained as a core value with all employees.
  • Develop ergonomic guidelines, standards, and best practices to inform the design and development of future systems.
  • Provide recommendations and design solutions to address human factors and ergonomic issues identified during evaluations and research studies.
  • Work closely with regulatory affairs and compliance teams to ensure that equipment meets relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements related to human factors and ergonomics reducing risk.
  • Coordinate return to work activities of the workers compensation program in coordination with the Office of Human Resources and third-party administrator.
  • Stay current on emerging trends, technologies, and research in the fields of human factors, ergonomics, and user experience design, and apply insights to enhance the working environment.
  • Educate and train internal teams on human factors principles, ergonomic design principles, and user-centered design methodologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Professional Competencies
  • Strong understanding of human factors principles, ergonomic principles, and user-centered design methodologies.
  • Proficiency in using human factors analysis tools, usability testing tools, and statistical analysis software.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and draw actionable insights.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Detail-oriented with a passion for improving the user experience and enhancing safety.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in human factors engineering, ergonomics, psychology, industrial design, or a related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in conducting human factors evaluations, usability testing, and ergonomic assessments in an office and research environment.
