Job Description

Position Summary:

The neurodiagnostic lab technician prepares patients for and conducts routine and specialized electroneurodiagnostic (END) procedures; collects data pertinent to the interpretation of test results. Tests include EEG, EMG, Evoked Potentials, Nerve Conduction Studies, and home sleep testing. Technician's assist physician with EMG studies.

Education, License & Cert:

High school graduate or GED Additional clinical certification preferred

Experience:

One year experience working in a healthcare setting.

Essential Functions:

1. Accurately performs neurodiagnostic testing according to standards.

2. Measures and accurately applies electrodes (according to the 10-20 system) in a timely manner and with appropriate impedances.

3. Performs tests in lab, patient's bedside and/or ICU.

4. Recognizes artifacts (patient, instrumental, or environmental). Documents, eliminates, or takes proper measures to monitor the artifact.

5. Implements alternative methods or adjusts controls to obtain optimal recording. This may include appropriate control setting changes on the machine, use of extra electrodes, extra montages, and use of activation procedure.

6. Describe all abnormal clinical manifestations observed during test.

7. Acquires basic knowledge of recording electrodes, stimulating electrodes, the recording instrument, operational and electrical concepts.

8. Chooses and accurately places appropriate stimulation devices according to EP modality.

9. Provides patient instruction for home sleep testing 10 Assists with training, supervision of new techs

Other Duties:

2. Attends CPR practice annually

3. Expands knowledge by participation in conferences, in-services, and independent study.

4. Participates in quality improvement activities and serves on performance improvement teams as appropriate.

5. Performs clerical functions necessary to support department operations.

6. Keeps equipment in clean, operating condition, detects instrument malfunctions and makes minor maintenance adjustments or reports the need for other repairs.
