Overview Under the direction of the Animal Care Facility Veterinarian, assist in providing high-quality medical care to animals in the care and custody of the City of Boston and any animals accessing services available through the City of Boston community medicine efforts. Responsibilities * Provides technical support to the shelter veterinarian during exams and surgeries. Surgical skills including, but not limited to intubating pets, IV catheters, anesthesia monitoring, surgical prep, dental prophylaxis and venipuncture. * Participates in rounds with the veterinarian and identifies animals in population requiring treatment or evaluation in accordance with shelter protocols. * Assists veterinarian(s) in medical including preparation and analysis of in house diagnostics such as fecal flotation, ear/skin cytology, urinalysis and blood smear. * Must be able to handle a large variety of animals, including wildlife and to restrain fractious patients in a humane way. * Maintains adequate inventory of medical supplies. * Able to work independently and relay medical findings to veterinarian and staff; administers vaccinations; perform exam(s) and humane euthanasia. * Must be able to effectively relay information between foster volunteers, adopters and shelter veterinarian. Plays active role in scheduling and educating foster volunteers and residents seeking veterinary care for their pets. * Effectively communicate and work as part of a team. * Performs related duties as required. Minimum Entrance Qualifications * Applicants must have at least two (2) years of full time experience working as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant. May be substituted with four (4) years part-time or equivalent experience. * At least one (1) year of surgical and anesthesia experience. * Preference will be given to candidates who are Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT) and those with shelter medicine experience. * Must be able to lift a minimum of fifty pounds (50lbs). * Must be able to work with all levels of management and in a diverse workplace setting. * Strong customer service skills are a plus. * Must maintain a clean and organized workspace. * Must have good computer skills; ability to learn and use Chameleon software. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to speak a second language is a plus. * Working knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite, Goggle Mail and any other database software a plus. * Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job. Must be able to work evenings and weekends when needed. Must be flexible and willing to work beyond your regularly scheduled shift. This position has received a waiver from the Boston Residency Commission establishing a temporary moratorium on the City of Boston Residency Ordinance for a period of three years, ending July 19, 2026. At that time, July 19, 2026, the successful applicant will be required to establish residency in the City of Boston to remain in their role.
