POSITION: Carpenter II

LOCATION: Facility Services

SALARY: Pay Grade 61

REPORTS TO: Carpentry Foreman

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time - 12 Months

JOB GOAL: Perform a variety of general carpentry, maintenance, and repair work on the school district's buildings and grounds in order to enhance the instructional environment.

KNOWLEDGE AND ATTRIBUTES
  • Someone who is reliable, possesses a strong work ethic with self motivation, and is experienced in general carpentry, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Working knowledge, experience, and expertise in the care, maintenance, safe use, and operation of carpentry tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety hazards, and safety practices.
  • Knowledge of building, fire, and life safety codes and regulations for school facilities.
  • Knowledge and use of computers, including Google applications such as Gmail.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement; support and exhibit organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, dependability, responsibility, being customer driven, and valuing diversity.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish and maintain positive working relationships with all school personnel.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works under the supervision of the Carpentry Foreman and Building Supervisor to maintain and repair JCPS facilities.
  • Perform general carpentry to make repairs or alterations to roof, gutters, downspouts, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, etc.
  • Select lumber to cut and trim to size, and other appropriate work according to oral or written specifications.
  • Properly operate, adjust, and maintain power tools and equipment.
  • Replace glass in doors and windows.
  • Build and repair doors, tables, chairs, and desks.
  • Perform work involving the following duties: repair blinds; install and/or remove white boards and cork boards; assist in changing fluorescent light tubes; and repair or renovate acoustical ceiling grid and ceiling tile.
  • Inspect buildings to determine the need for repairs or alterations; interpret and/or draw sketches or layouts to complete a project.
  • Perform heavy tasks for considerable periods of time.
  • Must be able to work independently or in teams as required.
  • Must be able to work overtime, on call rotation, and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies, adverse weather conditions, and unforeseen circumstances. Position may assist with snow and ice removal or flood mitigation under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • At all times perform work in a safe manner for yourself and those around you. Maintain a safe and clean working environment with all appropriate or necessary equipment to alert anyone to any type of safety concerns that could potentially cause injury.
  • Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions without the assistance from the immediate supervisor.
  • Be motivated to produce a high quality work product.
  • Ability to respond as needed to assist with emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Exhibit dexterity of hands and fingers to operate and use a variety of carpentry tools and equipment.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
  • Ability to walk up and down steps in a building.
  • Ability to carry, place, climb, and work on ladders of varying heights.
  • Must be able to climb and regularly work from ladders, scissor lifts, aerial lifts, and scaffolding.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds on occasion and 30 pounds repetitively.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to work in outdoor environments, both hot and cold.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or GED from regionally or nationally accredited institutions.
  • One year of varied experience as a journey level carpenter and completion of a recognized apprenticeship in carpentry.
  • Minimum of three years of varied carpentry experience preferred.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, teachers, students, administrators, community leaders, agency representatives, and others.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed to perform the duties of the position.
