To plan, direct and manage the Trauma Registry computerized database and computer technology functions that ensures compliance with rules and regulations of the Illinois Department of Public Health Trauma Registry. Provide Trauma incidence, management and outcome information to ensure quality care, and guide injury prevention program.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Integrity, accuracy and timely entry of abstracted and coded initial case information into the Trauma Registry database to provide trauma incidence, management and statistical information.
1. Maintain trauma registry files for both pediatric and adult patients

2. Abstract patient data from Emergency Department and hospital charts onto trauma registry data sheets for adult and pediatric trauma patients

3. Update, daily, the trauma registry data sheets for in-hospital adult and pediatric trauma patients based on information derived from trauma rounds

4. Provide ICD-9CM codes for diagnoses, procedures and complications for the adult and pediatric trauma patients based on information derived from Emergency Department and hospital charts

5. Calculate injury severity, Glasgow Coma and Champion's Trauma Scores for the adult and pediatric trauma patients based on information derived from the Emergency Department and hospital charts

6. Enter patient data into the trauma registry on the trauma service personal computer

7. Generate quarterly reports for the Chicago Department of Health Trauma System and the Illinois Department of Public Health Trauma System

8. Maintain data in the trauma registry computer system including appropriate back-up and archiving of data

9. Ensures Trauma Registry compliance with hospital policies and IDPH guidelines

10. Reviews/monitors IDPH rules and regulations and ensures Trauma Registry Compliance

11. Assists with development and implementation for the Trauma Registry according to IDPH requirements, database vendor-specific and hospital-specific needs

12. Obtains and reviews confidential medical information from Medical Records

13. Determines which demographic, diagnostic and referral information must be abstracted for Trauma Registry Data Base, according to requirements of IDPH

14. Codes and enters required information into Trauma Registry database for adult and pediatric trauma patients

15. Generates reports from Trauma Registry database to assist with routine statistical requests, approved CHMC physician studies and administrative statistical requests for planning and marketing

16. Identifies, develops and executes specific Trauma Registry project management plans and reports project status to Chairman, Division of Trauma Surgery
  • Provide accurate and timely Trauma Performance Improvement information

1. Assists in the management of the Trauma Committee's Performance Improvement Plan

2. Assists with the preparation of Trauma Services annual statistical report by running reports and preparing trends, demographics, etc. Activities also include word-processing, editing and layout

3. Participates in Trauma Committee Performance Improvement studies, including patient care studies, clinical indicators and volume statistics

4. Responsible for generating standing Performance Improvement reports using designated audit filters and reporting them at the monthly Trauma Performance Improvement Committee Meeting

5. Responsible for generating specific, customized reports from trauma registry data to support P.I. initiatives and ongoing trauma research

6. Request autopsy reports on all trauma patients who have died in the hospital
