Speech Writer

Are you an exceptional, experienced speech writer - communications specialist with experience writing speeches, official statements, op-eds, and scripts that support educational equity and opportunity, elementary and higher education, and issues related to legislative policies and priorities?
- Do you have experience producing communications for senior-level officials, cabinet members, or senior executives?
- Are you available to work onsite, in Washington, DC for 5-6 months?
- Do you have solid references and writing samples that demonstrate your expertise in the areas listed above?
To qualify for this role, you must have:
- Commitment to excellence
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or related field.
- 7+ years of experience directly related to speech writing and other senior-level communications.
- Superb written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience writing about education and issues related to education.
- Commitment to maintain discretion and agency confidentiality.
- Proficient knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work onsite in the Washington, DC office for the duration of the contract.
- Exceptional ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Knowledge of the U.S. Department of Education's mission and agency protocol.
- Write approximately 10 speeches monthly for senior level officials.
- Craft official statements and quotes for that reflect the agency's position and perspective.
- Support a wide range of high-leverage, high-visibility communications efforts.
- Research, write, and develop deliverables to include speeches, talking points, quotes, op-eds, Q&A, and scripts on specialized topics, such as educational equity and opportunity, P-12 education, higher education, and issues related to legislative policies and priorities.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must pass a security background check.
- Must provide recent, relevant references and writing samples.
