This position performs diagnostic ultrasound imaging including a variety of procedures (invasive and non-invasive) ranging from a variety of biopsies, routine OB/GYN, vascular venous and arterial, abdomen, small body parts to intra-cavity and color Doppler. Technologist must have strong critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and ability to problem-solve while assuming responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the technologist's care. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to deal effectively with and instruct patients who may be under physical/emotional stress; ability to comprehend and follow physicians verbal orders and follow imaging protocols. Technologist will also need to be able to work productively and effectively within a complex environment of inpatient, emergency department and outpatient circumstances by being able to multitask with changing priorities.

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for obtaining information such as patient identity, history, reviewing medical records for appropriateness of the exam or procedure and documentation accuracy. Technologist must maintain a high standard of medical ethics be self-motivated to pursue lifelong learning to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Provides excellent customer service.

Responsibilities:

(60%)* Produces quality images by selecting the appropriate technical factors, equipment and transducer settings. Verifies patient orders and reviews appropriateness for exam, obtains patient history, explains standard procedures, and addresses patient concerns to foster a sense of comfort and confidence to ensure the needs of individual patients are met. Determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes while using independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.

(20%)* The Technologist is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, performing and communicating findings of diagnostic examinations, responsible for daily operations of the department, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies.

(20%)* Responsible for appropriate sterilization techniques along with documentation accuracy of logs, charts, forms, and records in paper and electronic formats. Complies with all The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local regulatory laws, standards, and protocols.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Analyze sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.

The ability to remain focused and flexible in a fast-paced environment.

Assist in the instruction and training of residents, new hires, and students.

Provides ultrasound guidance for biopsies/aspirations. Prepares equipment and supplies; observes sterile techniques; assists physician, NP, RN, and other clinicians as needed.

Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the ultrasound technologist?s care.

Deliver quality patient care, including the use of universal precautions, ensuring patient confidentiality, and practicing appropriate medical ethics.

Must be able to effectively communicate orally, written, by telephone, with staff, physicians, and patients.

Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies.

Provides excellent customer service.

Always demonstrates professionalism and courtesy toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MyMichigan Health customers and potential customers.

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and medical center meetings.

Performs other work-related duties as assigned including assisting in other areas of the department as needed.

Provides department specific on call related duties during days, evenings, and weekends as assigned between departments included in the coverage area.

The flexibility to work long shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to alternate shifts.

Perform other related duties as required by authorized personnel.

Certifications and Licensures:

Credential:ARDMS OBGY: OB/GYN Ultrasound Tech

Equivalent Experience: Ultrasound technologists performing general ultrasound imaging, including abdomen, small parts, and obstetrics/gynecology, must obtain and maintain active certifications by the ARDMS in Abdomen or OB/GYN specialties within one year of the date of hire.

Credential:BLS: Basic Life Support

Equivalent Experience: Within 30 days of hire or transfer.

Credential:ULTRA C I: ARDMS-RVT OR CCI-RVS

Equivalent Experience: Ultrasound technologists performing vascular imaging such as arterial/venous exams must obtain and maintain active certifications by ARDMS in RVT or CCI-RVS specialties within one year of the date of hire. Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate and ARDMS or CCI re credentialing yearly requirements to maintain active registrant status.

Equivalent Experience: Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program and/or Cardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), or equivalent clinical diagnostic setting experience including hospital, clinical, or private practice is required. Associate of Science or health care related field is preferred.

Education Specialization: SONOGRAPHY

Other Information:

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND SKILLS:

One year work experience in a hospital setting is preferred. One-year full time work experience preferred.

Registry eligible new graduates may apply.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner in person and by phone.

Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL WORKING REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Can move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, pulling, reaching and lifter to provide patient care.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular, and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, manipulating, and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
