Position Title: Bus Assistant
General Statement: The assistant provides support to the bus/car driver in the safety, management and personal care of all students, including students with disabilities, during the absence of the regularly assigned bus assistant.

Qualifications:
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to follow safety precautions
  • Ability to complete written forms and records
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 35 pounds
  • Ability to pass random drug and alcohol testing
  • Ability to be certified in CPR/First Aid
Essential Duties:
  • Helps students to safely board and exit the school vehicle (bus/car)
  • Secures students in safety harness, car seat or wheelchair, when needed
  • Ensures that special equipment (car seat, wheelchair, etc.) is properly and safely secured to the vehicle
  • Operates wheelchair lifts and other specialized equipment, as needed
  • Assists with appropriate supervision of students, including students with medical and behavior concerns
  • Provides written reports as required by Supervisor of Transportation
  • Assists driver in maintaining a behavior management policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for students
  • Assists the driver in maintaining the assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition
  • Acts in a courteous and respectful manner, using good judgment and appropriate communication skills at all times
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students, parents, and other staff members
  • Models non-discriminatory behavior in all activities
  • Performs related work as required


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties are typically performed in/around school division vehicles (cars, buses). The bus assistant is frequently exposed to loud noise levels, fumes or airborne particles. Above average amount of sitting, reaching, bending, stopping and kneeling. Occasional standing, walking, twisting and turning. Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions. Must have the use of sensory skills as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.
