The Air Force Research Laboratory, Information Systems Division (AFRL/RIS) is seeking mid-level, DR-02, technologists to explore, research, experiment, and develop innovative information technologies that enable Air Force warfighters to achieve and demonstrate next generation ML, information management, and Command and Control technologies for decision support, and rapid distribution of actionable information for operations at speed and at scale.

Roles and responsibilities of this position include:
  • Lead ML-based S&T efforts complement mission information systems including design, architecture, behavior, and integration of "system of systems" that involve loosely coupled components, with an understanding of AI/ML techniques and optimization. Example focus areas include sparse data encodings, ML drift detection, and data/ML prioritization, characterization, analysis, orchestration.
  • Address limitations of current AI/ML state-of-the-art technologies by architecting, engineering, or developing for future AF operational replicator concept and rapid ML lifecycle management, with examples including operationalizing data using Large Language Models (LLMs), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), and other cutting edge approaches for geospatialization, alternative position, navigation, and timing methods, and simplifying ML processes for expression and analysis for warfighter use.
  • Contribute to a team of Scientists and Engineers conducting R&D for disadvantaged tactical communications environments, agile comms/networks, autonomous ML; active learning, reinforcement learning, explainable AI, generative AI, etc., and information-centric solutions for Agile Combat Employment (ACE).
  • Prepare reports and briefings and coordinate with customers, peers, DoD organizations, and AFRL management. Engages with organizations and technical POCs for site surveys, requirements capture, and translating to roadmaps for architectures, engineering, and test plans.
  • Develop and manage project research strategies, in house research management, self-directs R&D activities, collaborates with and mentor junior teammates.
  • Cultivate stakeholder engagements, foster partnerships, translating customer operational needs to technical/programmatic goals and objectives.
  • Travel is a requirement of this position.

Required Qualifications
  • US Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret security clearance
  • S&E candidates must possess a professional Science or Engineering (S&E) degree from an ABET accredited academic institution
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the DR-I, or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized Experience is experience directly related to the position that was performed at a level equivalent to the grade directly below the position.
  • Males must be registered for Selective Service, see www.sss.gov
  • This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position that requires Practitioner Level certification in Engineering & Technology Management (ETM). The selectee will have two years to meet ADPD requirements.
Desired Qualifications

A Master's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering is desirable.

Excellent communication skills

Knowledge of, or experience of, the following:
  • Data models and data representation methods
  • Computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, efficient program structures)
  • Computer engineering fundamentals (computer structures, computer networking)
  • Designing, developing information sharing and/or communication systems.
  • Teaming with Air Force civilian and military personnel, other DoD services, support contractors, and industry Subject-Matter Experts
  • Artificial Intelligence and /or Machine Learning tools and techniques
  • Programming skills: java, python, C/C++
  • Linear algebra
