Medical Laboratory Technician Resident

GENERAL SUMMARY Works under the supervision of the Core Lab Manager, Transfusion Services/Lab Education Manager and/or the Microbiology/Pathology/Safety Manager. The Medical Laboratory Technician Resident#s primary job function is to perform and assess laboratory tests. Performs quality control, routine maintenance and other duties as assigned. Collects, orders and/or processes specimens.# Performs phlebotomy, EKGs and other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education: High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required Enrolled in an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology or Medical Technology program as a second year student required Licensure: N/A Experience: Laboratory experience preferred Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact effectively with patients, patient family members, co-workers, and physicians/providers Effectively supports the mission and demonstrates the values of SOMC by honoring the dignity and worth of each person Shows concern and respect for others by dealing with customers and co-workers in a compassionate, sensitive, and responsive manner Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Hand/eye coordination in order to perform examinations using complex equipment using precise calibrations Essential Physical Requirements: Must stand and/or walk 75% of work hours per day while processing specimens, performing tests and specimen collection Sits 25% of work#hours performing tests and/or completing documentation Essential Mental Requirements: Ability to follow established procedures. Ability to pay close attention to detail when collecting specimens and performing testing Requires the ability to adjust to fluctuating workload and meet established deadlines Essential Sensory Requirements: Requires good vision and color discrimination to perform testing Ability to communicate clearly and effectively when responding to routine inquiries and reporting results Exposure to Hazards: Exposure to bio-hazardous materials, needles and infectious diseases in clinical laboratory and patient care environments Chemical exposure in laboratory testing areas Frequently exposed to noise. Other: N/A JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Specific activities may change from time to time. # ## Collects, orders, and processes specimens for various laboratory tests. Verifies patient identification and explains procedure. Performs phlebotomies including venipunctures and finger-sticks on adults and children, infant heel-sticks, and arterial punctures on adults. Performs waived and moderately-complex testing on automated instruments under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist. May perform physiochemical analysis and occult blood testing on biological specimens. Participates in proficiency survey testing program for waived and moderately-complex testing. Performs and documents quality control and quality assurance data for waived and moderately-complex instruments. Documents all quality control failures and corrective actions taken. Reports documentation to supervisor/manager for review. Performs and documents instrument daily and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and resolves minor problems. Notifies section supervisor/manager of all problems and action taken. Centrifuges specimens and distributes to work stations. Checks pendings and aliquots specimens for testing. Prepares and labels simple solutions for use in diagnostic testing. Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories. Keeps work area neat and clean. Follows all safety policies and procedures. Takes inventory, stocks and orders supplies for area. Participates in training and orientation of new staff and students. Performs clerical and computer tasks and procedures as required. Assists supervisors/managers with clerical and technical support duties as assigned. Performs phlebotomy and EKGs as assigned.
