Job Summary

The Diet Clerk is responsible for ensuring all patients are ordering the correct meals for their specific diets. The careful monitoring of caloric intake and other Physician ordered restrictions, and the communication of these needs between patients and their primary caregivers is also required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Enter patient selections into the Room Service software program accurately and quickly while still following the prescribed restrictions. Uses computers and software to gather information and maintain proper records.
  • Responsible for patient menu knowledge and answering specific questions about the menu.
  • Verify prescribed diet for each patient to ensure accuracy. Maintain nutritional menu knowledge as it relates to patients' dietary requirements and/or restrictions.
  • Able to visit patients throughout the hospital, interviewing them to determine food likes and dislikes and then entering the information into the Room Service software as directed by management.
  • Ability to counsel patients regarding types of diets, dietary restrictions, the patient's diet order requirements, and diet-specific menus. Capable of suggesting alternatives that meet a patient's wants with the needs of their prescribed diet.
  • Build solid communication skills with the Dietitians to ensure proper nutritional needs are being met for all patients.
  • Preparation of Meals on Wheels containers with proper labeling for nutrition.
  • Assists with the delivery of patient trays and nourishments to patients in any area in the hospital as required. To include delivery of large, loaded carts of food trays for numerous patients, as directed by management.
  • Stocking and sanitation duties: may need to replenish supplies and pull items for re-stocking. May need to stock new inventory arriving. Able to carry trays, dishware and silverware from dish room as required. Able to follow work routines and sanitation principles. Understands SDS sheets and safe food handling practices.
  • Comply with all applicable policies and procedures, including all departmental and functional policies and procedures. Must participate in performance improvement activities and mandatory education requirements.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of team dynamics and contribute to team building as it relates to guest and employee satisfaction.
  • Participate in the Employee Development Process by participating in self-evaluations, meetings, annual reviews, and all mandatory education requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
  • Minimum: High School diploma
Experience Requirements
  • Minimum: Customer service-related work experience
  • Preferred: Diet Office/Clerk experience in a hospital environment
License/Certification Requirements
  • None
