Location:
Transportation Department Base hourly rate is $18.35. Additional compensation for past work-related experience and education may be granted.

Purpose: The Bus Driver provides clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure that students enjoy the full advantage of school district programs and activities. To accomplish these tasks the Substitute Bus Driver must work closely with the staff and administration of USD 253.

Responsible to: Transportation Director

Payment rate: As established by the Emporia Board of Education

Qualifications:
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Valid CDL license with required endorsements.
  3. Comply with required drivers license records review and meet district requirements of a satisfactory driving record.
  4. Meet all state requirements for Bus Drivers, including Defensive Driving and First Aid Certification.
  5. Successfully complete agility and reaction time test.
  6. Successfully complete the driver training program.
  7. Successfully complete required substance abuse testing program as prescribed by USD 253.
  8. Complete required physical examination for Bus Drivers.
  9. Desire to continue career improvement.
  10. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office.
  11. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Essential Functions:
  1. Act as substitute, activity or route driver as assigned. If driver is still in training they must be making adequate progress to completing qualifications for bus driver.
  2. Provide clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure that students enjoy the full advantage of school district programs and activities.
  3. Ensure that all activities conform to State school transportation guidelines.
  4. Communicate effectively using the two-way radio system.
  5. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  6. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  7. Operate all vehicles and equipment as necessary in a safe and efficient manner.
  8. Support the value of an education.
  9. Support the vision and mission of USD 253.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
  1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  2. Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  3. Occasionally requires stooping, bending, and reaching.
  4. Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
  5. Occasionally requires climbing and balancing.
  6. Requires driving skills, including ability to operate vehicle at night.
  7. Requires agility necessary to quickly and safely exit and enter driver's seat and emergency doors.
  8. Requires lengthy and overnight travel.
  9. Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.

General Responsibilities:
  1. Abide by all current Kansas school transportation regulations.
  2. Provide safe and orderly transportation to and from school related activities.
  3. Maintain assigned schedule.
  4. Transport authorized students only.
  5. Discharge students at authorized stops only.
  6. Maintain effective pupil behavior management over groups of children.
  7. Abide by all traffic laws.
  8. Inspect bus prior to each route or activity trip, and file inspection forms with the Transportation Director.
  9. Maintain bus in clean condition, and inform the Transportation Director whenever a bus is received in unsatisfactory condition.
  10. Immediately notify the Transportation Director of lateness or emergency mechanical failure.
  11. Inform maintenance staff of routine maintenance and repair required.
  12. Report all accidents and file required accident reports with the Transportation Director.
  13. Meet emergency situations in accordance with operating procedures.
  14. Wash, clean and fuel bus on an established schedule.
  15. Assist Mechanic with emergency repair as needed.
  16. Maintain current route information and maps.
  17. Complete and submit all reports at the end of each day or activity trip.
  18. Provide a list of persons on trip to comply with USD 253 Crisis Plan (activity trips only).
  19. 19. Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and federal laws.
  20. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  21. Stay abreast of new technologies, data management and communication.
  22. Comply with legal and regulatory requirements as provided by state and federal law.
  23. Uphold and enforce board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules/regulations including but not limited to:
    • Acceptable use of technology
    • Sexual and racial harassment
    • Child abuse reporting
    • Health and safety including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan
  24. Maintain safe and well-organized instructional spaces.
  25. Respond to change in a productive manner.
  26. Strive to communicate the positive aspects of our school program to the public in word and deed.
  27. Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or Administrative Staff.
