Overview:

Responsible for handling, performing, evaluating and releasing results on laboratory specimens received for analysis. Includes performing all requirements relating to specimens and generating accurate, timely results and reporting. Responsible for all technical operations of the assigned area of the laboratory. Assists with the coordination of processes and quality improvements

Responsibilities:

Assists in the evaluation of new products, methods, and/or instrumentation to maintain and/or improve quality outcomes. Assists in the preparation, maintenance and review of assigned departmental procedures completing by due date. Performs any necessary validations (methods, quality control, software upgrades) as needed.

Complies with all regulatory standards and maintains a working knowledge of the standards in relation to scope of testing (CAP, CLIA, TJC, FDA, AABB). Active participant in accreditation surveys. Maintains knowledge of, demonstrates, and adheres to hospital and laboratory safety and compliance policies and procedures.

Ensures timely handling and monitors adherence of policies relating to the appropriate handling, testing, resulting, investigation, corrective action and records for proficiency testing (PT) required by accrediting agencies.

Performs all processes associated with testing of laboratory specimens (pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical) on test systems according to established laboratory policies and procedures. Demonstrates effective problem solving skills.

Practices effective and efficient use of supplies and reagents and actively participates in inventory control. Seeks out means to improve operating efficiency and reduction of costs where possible.

Prioritizes assigned duties and workload to ensure completion meets established laboratory turnaround times. Serves as a resource for laboratory staff and other hospital departments and actively resolves problems/issues to completion. Ensures appropriate response and follow up on customer service issues. Provides leadership as needed and assists other leaders with administrative duties.

Responsible for teaching, training, monitoring and evaluating staff competency. Performs remediation and retraining as necessary. Assists staff in completing competency documentation by due date.

Responsible for the performance of quality control, maintenance procedures, and quality assurance activities to ensure effective operation of test systems. Assists in the development and ensures the implementation and monitoring of quality process improvements. Ensures corrective action completed and documented according to procedure prior to release of any testing results.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Required, for all hires on or after 1/1/16 -
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science.
OR
Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical or biological science with a minimum of 60 semester hours specifically including, 6 hours of Chemistry, 6 hours of Biology and 12 additional hours in any combination of Chemistry, Biology, or medical Laboratory Technology. Transcript with degree indicated must be provided and evaluated by laboratory leadership prior to offer.
OR
a "Diploma" in Medical Technology, obtained prior to April 24, 1995, may be considered. Transcript with degree indicated must be provided and evaluated by laboratory leadership prior to offer.
Preferred -
Bachelor?s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science.
A combination of education and experience will be considered for employees hired prior to 1/1/16.
EXPERIENCE: Required - Three to four years of laboratory experience in a high complexity laboratory in designated specialty or subspecialty. Preferred - Five years of laboratory experience preferred.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING: REQUIRED
Required, for all hires on or after 1/1/16.
- ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certification - Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist,
- NCA (National Certification Agency) certification - Clinical Laboratory Scientist,
- AMT (American Medical Technologist) certification - Medical Technologist,
OR
- HEW (Health, Education, and Welfare) certification - Medical Technologist.
Preferred - ASCP certification
