Surgical Specialties Nurse

A surgical specialties nurse is responsible for providing independent planning, organizing, and implementing care for patients within a specialty practice. This includes coordinating patient care, acting as a liaison between patients and healthcare teams, and counseling and teaching families on medical conditions and interventions.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform all RN nursing duties including triaging patients in a walk-in clinic
  • Coordinate all activities related to patient care in the specialty
  • Serve as a liaison between patient/family and healthcare team members
  • Counsel and teach families on medical conditions and interventions
  • Coordinate and facilitate delivery of services within surgical procedures
  • Participate in programs and committees related to the specialty
  • Conduct professional and public speaking engagements for educational and public relations purposes
  • Participate in educational opportunities and workshops associated with specialty
  • Provide statistical reports as needed
  • Rotate on call as directed including holidays, nights, and weekends
  • Direct and coordinate educational activities for hospital employees regarding specialty surgeries and assist physician with research projects
  • Collaborate with community physicians on daily care of specialty patients
  • Coordinate diagnostic procedures for complications following surgery in consultation with physician
  • Direct management of patient care caseload pre and postoperative for specialty patients and their families
  • Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
  • Provide input and assist in the formulation of departmental policies and procedures and budget as requested
  • Follow patient safety policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner and encourage patient participation in their own care

Qualifications:

  • Graduate from a nationally accredited nursing program; bachelor's degree preferred
  • 3 years directly related experience required
  • Bilingual in English and Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo preferred
  • Current RN license in NM or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM and CPR certification required
  • Medium work physical demands and significant exposure to hazardous materials with rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends
