Position Responsibilities:

  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infections disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, procedures and assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic examination, Implements Standard Precautions on all patients, as per hospital policy.
  • Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information, patient's medical record(s) to verify physician's order prior to examination.
  • Ensure that the sonography examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of medical necessity.
  • Inspects images for quality, and monitors all images with respect to proper patient name, date and medical record number prior to interpretation by Radiologist.
  • Assists with training of new technologists, technical assistants and physician residents in all phases of assigned procedures, as requested by supervisor/manager/director.
  • Demonstrates competency and observes safety guidelines when operating all specialized equipment in assigned clinical area, performs quality control procedures to ensure that the ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels.
  • Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patients ability to understand.
  • Apply independent judgment during the sonography examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images.
  • Adjusts to variable schedules and/or procedure techniques that may be required at times.
  • Reports all equipment malfunctions to lead technologist / supervisor and clinical engineering immediately.
  • Maintains and stocks room with proper supplies necessary to complete the ultrasonic examinations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and proper use of computer programs, particularly the EPIC and SYNAPSE systems.
  • Provides a preliminary report (electronically or manually) of sonography examination for use by the interpreting physician and documents any/all patient exam delays in EPIC "Tech Notes" with date/time & technologist's initials.
  • Completes exam data entry on all studies performed on a daily basis, as well as any other necessary paperwork associated with each case. Ensures that all images were successfully sent to the PACS system.
  • Checks business e-mail daily, responds as appropriate & attends monthly department staff meetings as scheduled.

Qualifications:

  • American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certified. Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) preferred, but not required.
  • Graduate of an AMA Accredited Educational Program for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or equivalent. Graduate of an AMA Accredited Educational Program in Radiologic Technology (ARRT) preferred, but not required.
  • Applicant must be a graduate of an AMA Accredited Educational Program for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or equivalent. Graduate of an AMA Accredited Educational Program in Radiologic Technology (ARRT) preferred, but not required. Applicant must be registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) with one to three years of clinical ultrasound experience. The minimum ARDMS Registry certification to include Abdomen or OB/GYN with the other certification being completed within six months. Vascular Technologist (RVT) certification preferred, but not required.
