Position Summary: Facilitate efficient, effective pain prevention and management practices for inpatients under the direction and supervision of the Pain Service; develop pain prevention and management plans for patients though collaborating with the patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare providers as appropriate; and promoting the usage of pain prevention and management pharmaceutical and non?pharmaceutical best practices. Education, License & Cert:

Registered Nurse in the State of Practice. Start of BSN program within 1 year of hire and completed within 4 years of hire required. BSN in Nursing preferred.

Any previously agreed upon effective date for obtaining a Bachelor's degree in nursing between individuals and facilities will remain in effect.

Any collective bargaining contract with specific time frames for obtaining a Bachelor's degree in nursing will supersede the above point and will remain in effect. Experience: The Registered Nurse must be a graduate nurse eligible to take the state board examination or a registered nurse currently licensed in the state of employment and must complete an IV challenge examination as outlined by the hospital within the orientation period. In addition, the Registered Nurse must meet the individual nursing unit specifications regarding educational requirements during employment. Must maintain CPR certification and practice. ACLS is unit dependent. Nursing Unit specifications regarding educational requirements during employment. Essential Functions: Part 1: Facilitates efficient, effective pain prevention and management practices for inpatients. A) Collaborates with patients, families, nurses, pharmacists, and physicians to facilitate the development of a comprehensive pain prevention and management plan for patients who are risk for inadequate pain control. B) Completes daily rounds on patients who are at high risk for inadequate pain control and collaborates with other healthcare professionals to meet the needs of the patients regarding pain management practices. C) Facilitates and participates in research and the utilization of best practices to enhance pharmacological and non?pharmacological interventions.d) Completes adjunctive pain management practices such as use of heat and cold, distraction, imagery, therapeutic touch, and massage. Part 2: e) Cares for patients receiving a nerve block procedure, including but not limited to:i) Patient assessment including non?invasive hemodynamic monitoringii) Patient care planning, implementation, and evaluation of care iii) Participate in utilization of equipment during the nerve block procedureiv) Administer medication within scope of practicev) Patient and family educationf) Collaborates with other entities to maximize pain prevention and management for patients across the continuum of care.g) Documents assessment, planning, interventions, evaluation, and revisions of care in the progress notes and/or interdisciplinary team note.h) Develops and maintains appropriate documentation tools across the continuum of care to enhance pain prevention and management practices.i) Monitors and takes action on pertinent pain management outcomes data including clinical, functional, financial, and satisfaction.j) Adheres to a strict level of confidentiality. Participates with interdisciplinary teams that contribute to role development and advances nursing practice outcomes related to pain management.a) Collaborates with specialty services to identify best practices for specific health problems, diseases, and procedures within specialties.b) Provides educational sessions for healthcare providers based on best practices including education regarding pharmacological and non?pharmacological interventions.c) Participates with nursing and other disciplines to enhance patient care through interdisciplinary activities, such as education, consultation, management, technological development, or research opportunities.d) Creates a pain management nursing resource team.e) Uses current healthcare research to expand clinical knowledge and enhance role performance of team membersf) Uses the results of evaluation analyses of pain outcomes to make or recommend process or structural changes including policy, procedures, or protocols. Provides education to patients, families, and healthcare providers.a) Manages the inpatient Epidural program though collaboration with physicians, pharmacists, and nurses.b) Resource for the inpatient Patient Controlled Analgesia through collaboration with physicians, pharmacists, and nurses.c) Facilitates the development and annual review of educational materials for patients, families, and healthcare providers. Patient educational materials will be appropriate to the patient's developmental level, learning needs, readiness to learn, and cultural values and beliefs. Other Duties: Other duties as assigned within the realm of the practice based on licensure.
