Job Summary and Qualifications

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist produces images in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) standards. Furthermore, the technologist will perform within the guidelines set by the Bureau of Radiation Control, Hospital Policies and Procedures Manual and the Radioactive Materials License. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is accountable to the Radiation Safety Officer for ensuring all regulations are in compliance in the Department. Provides services using radioisotopes to assist in the diagnosis or treatment of disease. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist demonstrates knowledge of the human structure and functions, patient care, positioning, principles of nuclear medicine, radiation protection and specialized techniques. Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complementary of medical ethics.

  • Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.
  • Consistently produce scans of optimal diagnostic quality on patients ranging from Neonatal to Geriatric.
  • Follow established protocols for imaging and isotopes dosage; adjusts when appropriate for age or disease.
  • Operate all Nuclear Medicine cameras, computers and related equipment, efficiently and effectively.
  • Complete quality scans in a timely manner, effectively organizing and prioritizing workflow.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in scanning trauma, acute & challenging patients; possess skill to modify positioning and scanning factors when standard cannot be performed.
  • Possess knowledge of disease processes, adequately image these findings and communicate them to the Radiologist.
  • Perform radioactive therapy procedures according to Nuclear Medicine Policies and Procedures and the Radioactive Material License.
  • Employ techniques to minimize radiation exposure by adhering to the ALARA program.
  • Adhere to radiation plan, consistently demonstrates an awareness of radiation safety practices.
  • Explain procedures to patients and family in terms they understand, attempts to clarify any misconceptions.
  • Maintain awareness of patient safety, patient privacy, confidentiality and dignity at all times.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an educational program in radiology accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or graduate of an American Medical Association approved program in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology or a military training program of equivalent standards.
  • Associates Degree or higher in Radiologic Technology – preferred
  • Two to three years as a previous experience as a Radiologic Tech – preferred

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

  • Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (CNMT) OR Registered Technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, post- primary certification in Computed Tomography (ARRT (NM)).
  • If hired prior to 4/13/12 and been performing x-rays since 1987 AND was grandfathered in by the state of Texas, only CMRT required.
  • Registered Certificate of Transportation - Transportation of Hazardous Radioactive Material.
  • BLS certification as per SDH policy.
