What you'll do:
The successful candidate will be a member of the External Communications team and work daily to support the President of Viasat. The individual will be based in the President’s office in Carlsbad, CA and will require frequent domestic and international travel with the President of Viasat.
To promote the reputation and brand of Viasat, the company’s President is required to engage in a wide range of press and social media activities both within the US and internationally. To ensure the President’s communications are efficiently and effectively managed, we are looking for an experienced public relations professional who can support the President with journalist engagements, at major speaking opportunities, coordinate his social media posts, support communications to internal stakeholders and act as the liaison between the President’s office and the external communications, social media, internal communications and wider CMO function.
The Public Relations Specialist for the President will be supported by the resources of the External Communications, social media and Internal Communications teams and will work with these teams to ensure that the President’s communications are aligned with the company’s central marketing and external and internal communications strategies.
The role will require the selected individual to create and/or adapt the President’s content and, based on input from the President and other senior executives, ensure the President has the required materials in advance of engagements. The individual will manage and attend the President’s engagements with press, to ensure that all necessary arrangements have been made to support the President in these meetings, and to ensure that President is sufficiently prepared for each engagement opportunity. The role will also require coordination with Internal Communications to ensure the President is prepared for major internal stakeholder meetings.
The PR Specialist will come to serve the President as a trusted partner and advisor, ensuring effective communication and messaging that is clear, authentic, and aligned with the overarching brand narrative.
The day-to-day:
Manage the flow of external communications and social media content requiring the President’s review
Maintain an ongoing dialogue with the External Communications and Social Media teams (and wider CMO team, and Investor Relations team, as required)
Liaise closely with the team in the President’s office to ensure that communications from the President are aligned to updates occurring within the business
Support the External Communications, social media and Internal Communications teams in building, adapting and fulfilling communications strategies developed for the President
Maintain a calendar of the President’s schedule as it pertains to press, social media and internal stakeholder opportunities
Support the President in all press meetings (remote and in person), ensuring that the President is fully prepared for these engagements and is aware of the schedule and objectives of each engagement, note the topics covered and any follow-up actions required, calling upon other teams within the company to ensure that deadlines for follow-ups are met
Update content for the President based on feedback and input from the President and other senior executives
Travel with the President within the US and internationally as required to fulfil the above accountabilities
Convey the President’s instructions to the External Communications, social media and wider CMO teams as required and ensure that where actions are required, these are followed through
Partner with internal communications as opportunities arise for executive amplification
Partner with external communications and other CMO teams to ensure alignment and consistency in messaging
Provide on-the-spot guidance to the President prior to engagement with press and feedback on performance with journalists
Experiment with new, creative ways for president-led communications to reach employees with relevant news and information, driving engagement in priority initiatives.
What you'll need:
8+ years of relevant experience, including media relations, social media, speechwriting, experience with executive communication in complex organizations, and employee engagement.
Strong strategic thinking, analytical skills, and written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate business objectives into clear and concise communications.
Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment, demonstrating flexibility and awareness of market and technology trends
Highly motivated, self-directed and performance driven
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
Experience managing executive communications in a highly dynamic environment
Demonstrable experience of press engagement and supporting content on social media channels
