Custodian

Community Assistance (CAN) was founded in Baltimore County, Maryland in 1965 to eliminate the root causes and consequences of poverty. We presently serve clients in Baltimore County and surrounding jurisdictions and manage multiple programs providing a variety of services. Community Assistance Network operates two of Baltimore County's largest homeless shelters: The Eastside Family Emergency Shelter, located in Rosedale, and the Westside Men's Emergency Shelter, located in Catonsville.

Job Purpose:

The Janitor supports the residents by maintaining the Shelter Mission, Values and Motto; enforcing all aspects described in the Shelter’s Resident Guidebook including programming, meals, chores, services, etc. The Janitor reports directly to the Shelter Manager.

The Janitor is directly responsible for maintaining a clean and healthy environment for clients, staff, and volunteers by performing a variety of cleaning and maintenance duties.

Attend staff meetings as scheduled.

Facilitates effective communication with other staff members.

Other duties as assigned.

Specific duties:

Sweep and clean office and program delivery areas.

Responsible for operating the dishwashing machine and washing kitchen dishes.

Cleans, sanitizes, kitchen equipment.

Remove garbage from program office areas.

Clean floors, restrooms and other assigned areas as needed.

Cleans messes, spills and debris as needed.

Utilizes provided cleaning supplies and equipment appropriately.

Sits, stands, bends, lifts and move continually during work hours and is subject to lifting over 50lbs.

Report routine observations of residential and public areas to supervisory staff including conditions that may affect the safety and/or security of clients, residents, staff, or volunteers.

Requirements

Highschool diploma or GED required.

At least 6 months of cleaning, custodial or janitorial experience in a social services environment

Some human service experience preferred.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of community services.

Effective listening, professionalism, effective communication skills (verbally & non-verbally), customer (client)-focus, informing others, handles pressure, and supply management.

Ability to work well under pressure.

Strong organizational skills.

Must have a valid driver’s license and transportation.
