Summary:
This position performs tasks of varying complexity. These include: cleans, terminally disinfects/sterilizes all endoscopes and supporting equipment; maintains necessary documentation in compliance with regulatory agencies; assists the physician, anesthesiologist, and nurse in performing procedures as needed. Stocking of supply shelves; and maintaining departmental charge and tracking information.

Responsibilities:
(30%)* Cleans, air leak tests, disinfects/sterilizes all scopes and supporting equipment in compliance with medical center policy.

 

(30%)* Assists the nurse and physician in the treatment room with patient care, i.e. patient positioning/support, application of monitoring devices, assisting with equipment, etc.

 

(20%)* Maintains appropriate/accurate documentation records of the reprocessing and sterilization process including; scope buddy and high level disinfectants as directed by

regulatory agencies and the medical center policy.

 

(20%)* Provides for sanitation of OR room after each case, Stocks work areas and OR rooms with sanitation supplies, linens, solutions, and specimen containers. Cleans OR anesthesia equipment between cases including restocking of supplies and equipment.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Compiles the supplies needed for procedures.

 

Fulfills on-call responsibilities and extra shift coverage as needed.

 

In the performance of regular job duties, it is appropriate for this job code to have access to the medication room and supply room for the purpose of stocking.

 

Maintains immediate availability to assist in routine and emergency procedures. Assists anesthesia with blocks in the pre-op area.

 

Assists in maintaining an appropriate level of supplies in each operating room.

 

Communicates with the Biomedical Department and department supervisor or manager to assure the availability of properly functioning equipment and scopes.

 

Develops proficiency in the use of the Medivator, autoclave and Sterrad NX for the processing of scopes and surgical instruments.

 

Process instruments and equipment not sent to Sterile Processing Department.

 

Demonstrates a knowledge and proficiency in the use of alternative terminal disinfection methods.

 

Maintains an appropriate supply of processing chemicals and tests for efficacy prior to use.

 

Changes solutions per Medical Center policy and manufacturer’s guidelines.

 

Assists the physician intra-procedurally in both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to obtaining biopsies, removing polyps, dilating strictures, etc.

 

Actively participates in time outs and other patient safety measures.

 

Performs point of care laboratory testing. Record temperature and humidity of each room daily.

 

Enters anesthesia billing data for completed cases.

 

Participates in continuing education opportunities leading to becoming a certified gastroenterology technician.

 

Develops proficiency in the operation and routine maintenances of procedure equipment including video-systems, argon plasma coagulator, cautery units and BK ultrasound.

 

Ensures anesthesia equipment is properly disinfected and cleaned after use per hospital infection control policy.

 

Assures compliance with the regulatory agencies standards such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS), the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), American Association of Medical Instruments (AAMI), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA).

Certifications and Licensures:
BLS - Basic Life Support

Equivalent Experience: Within 3 months of hire or transfer

 

 

Required Education:
High School Diploma or GED required

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups in the medical center, including peers, management, and customers.

 

Knowledge of Universal Precautions and sterile techniques.

 

Organizational skills needed to prioritize daily workload. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when setting up, cleaning, maintaining, and handling anesthesia drugs and apparatus required.

 

Demonstrated completion of yearly unit competency requirements.

Medical knowledge obtained through job experience on a nursing unit or other related healthcare setting preferred.

Flexible scope reprocessing certification for full time Endoscopy Technicians preferred after 2 years of hire or transfer to position.

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

 

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

 

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

 

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

 

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

 

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.  Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

 

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

 

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.  May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

 

Physical Demand Level: Medium.  Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
