Peace Hospital, part of UofL Health, is a private, non-profit behavioral health hospital. One of the largest behavioral health facilities in the nation, Peace Hospital is known for providing care for children, adolescents, adults and senior adults, age 55 and older.  

It’s Kosair Charities Children’s Peace Center is the largest and most comprehensive private provider of youth inpatient behavioral health services in the country. The hospital was the nation’s first behavioral health care center to open a retail pharmacist operated, long-acting injection clinic. The clinic was established to help people adhere to prescribed medications for behavioral health conditions, such as substance use and psychotic disorders.

Job Summary 

The Art Therapist is responsible for providing direct clinical services to child, adolescent, and adult patients utilizing art and other expressive therapies to address interpersonal issues that cause emotional distress. 

 

1. Professional Development: Assumes personal responsibility for maintaining professional development, licensure, practice and/or education.
Measure of Success: Submits record of certification, licensure, and minimum of 4 hours inservice annually in area of practice and 6 hours of supervision if required annually; maintains current CPR and SCM certification and reviews without any lapse.
2. Assessment: Utilizes knowledge of activity therapy to perform activity therapy assessments which accurately assess the patient’s abilities and needs and makes individualized, specific, measurable recommendations which are clinically appropriate to facilitate meeting patients’ treatment goals.
Measure of Success: A review of two records at end of probation period and annually demonstrate all assessments completed within 72 hours of admission and recommendations are individualized, behavioral, specific, measurable.
3. Planning: Participates in interdisciplinary treatment planning meetings, or gives written input, offering patient updates, treatment suggestions, and the sharing of program observations with other treatment team members. Treatment plan entries are individualized, specific, measurable and updated as the patient’s needs change.
Measure of Success: At end of probation period and annually: 2 records are reviewed. Treatment plan entries are present 100% of time and are individualized, specific and measurable. No negative reports received stating therapist has failed to provide timely input into treatment planning process.
4. Implementation:
4a. Develops therapeutic activities for assigned patients and independently conducts a variety of therapy groups, utilizing effective expressive mediums and group therapy principles, appropriate for patient(s) age, developmental level and clinical presentation.
4b. Develops and maintains an orderly, safe and appropriately stocked supply of recreational therapeutic mediums in order to conduct safe and effective clinical activities.
4c. Reports patient incidents occurring in the activity therapy process promptly and concisely, to the appropriate staff members.
4d. Maintains accurate patient charts by recording and updating information while ensuring confidentiality of documentation. Documentation reflects patient(s) presentation, goals of individual or group therapeutic intervention, modality used and patient response in behaviorally specific terms.
4e. Initiates and completes special projects as assigned; e.g., participation in program development, student supervision, staff orientation/training.
4g. If unit based, performs other duties as assigned.
Measure of Success: A review of 2 records for individual or group therapy entries demonstrates choice of therapeutic activities are individualized to patient(s) age, development and clinical presentation; no lapse in confidentiality; entries address patient’s presentation, goals and specific behavioral response as well as clear processing with patient interpretation is completed within 24 hours of ctivity groups and within 5 days for Activity Therapy groups 95% of time.
5. Evaluation: Evaluates effectiveness of therapeutic modality or intervention in assisting patient to process therapeutic issues and feelings and in goal achievement. Identifies revisions to approach/modality to further enhance patients positive therapeutic response. Demonstrates flexibility in adapting therapeutic approach based on professional reassessment and feedback from peers and treatment team.
Measure of Success: The above is demonstrated 90% of time in review of medical record, one during probation and two annually.
6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field and minimum one year experience providing direct individual or group therapeutic services required.

Or

Certified recreation therapist required.

Or

5 years direct care experience required.

 

Experience (required and preferred):

If Bachelor’s Degree one year direct care experience preferred

If certified recreation therapist, one year of direct care experience preferred.

If no Bachelor’s Degree 5 years direct care experience

Healthcare Provider/Basic Life Support, required.
Able to complete Safe Crisis Management and perform Safe Crisis Management techniques, required.
