Perioperative Support Associate

Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute is one of the region’s largest orthopedic and sports medicine practices, providing comprehensive care for more than 250,000 patients each year. In August 2023, the institute opened Florida’s first dedicated orthopedic hospital, featuring 75 private inpatient rooms, 10 operating suites with four virtually connected suites that can be used to train surgeons around the world, and a state-of-the-art research and innovation center with a 10-station bio skills lab and 3D printer.
In March 2023, a new medical pavilion opened adjacent to the hospital and houses outpatient clinics, an imaging suite, physical therapy spaces and the largest orthopedic ambulatory surgery center in Florida. Expertise, technology and services come together under one roof and cover the whole spectrum of care — from prevention and diagnostics to therapeutic and surgical treatment options to physical therapy, rehabilitation and performance health. The institute also holds official medical roles with multiple professional, college and high school athletic teams as well as well-known sporting events and venues.
Jewett Orthopedic Institute is hiring for a Perioperative Support Associate
The Perioperative Support Associate will perform the duties of the PSA I and II, plus specialty specific advanced field support skills.
Status: Full-Time
Location: 62 Columbia St. Orlando
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
Understands the sterile technique required to establish a sterile field. Demonstrates the skills of surgical scrubbing, gowning and gloving and working within a sterile field.
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PSA II can assists in preparing the O.R. for surgical procedures by opening sterile
supplies, identifying minor equipment problems and setting up rooms per procedure preference cards.
Works closely with co-workers to ensure availability of needed equipment, O.R. beds, and stretchers.
Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and Anesthesia personnel, assists with positioning of patients for procedures and holding extremities during the operative prep.
Assists in maintenance of unit records and supplies.
Scrubs into a surgical procedure to hold a limb, camera or retractor placed by surgeon during a surgical procedure.
Suctions at the surgical site when able to see the suction tip and under the direction of the surgeon. Cuts suture ends at skin closure under the direction of the surgeon.
Assists the circulating nurse under direct supervision.
Hooks up and trouble shoots video equipment.
Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
May have limited access to areas storing medications.
Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
Meets annual educational requirements.
Evidences self-direction and personal accountability for work practice and demonstrates responsiveness to departmental and facility needs.
Performs duties in a cost efficient manner.
Contributes to organizational effectiveness by reporting for duty on time, adhering to policies concerning rest and lunch breaks, and completes assigned duties in an effective, efficient manner.
Performs duties while presenting a consistent professional image in appearance, work performance and communication practices.
Demonstrates a positive attitude when interacting with patients, their families, visitors, other employees, physicians and other associates.
Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary surgical healthcare team in both all work settings.
Participates in Environments of Care activities as assigned.
Demonstrates knowledge of legal issues, patient rights and compliance with the standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the perioperative setting.
Demonstrates intra-operative handling of sterile equipment and supplies.
Qualifications:
Education/Training
High School diploma or equivalent.
Must successfully complete first available PSA II training course (written and skill testing) and demonstrate completion of 30 hours of competent surgical case participation.
Licensure/Certification
Maintains current BLS/HealthCare certification.
Experience
Three (3) months experience as PSA I or Clinical Technician; or currently enrolled in or completed a Nursing, Surgical Tech or Medical Program.
