Academic counseling plays a crucial role in the success of undergraduates. Its primary aim is to support students in setting and reaching their educational, career, and life objectives. Advising isn't just about sharing details on courses and enrollment; it's about prompting students to reflect on the essence and path of their education. Academic counselors are here to build relationships with students, assist in exploring and comprehending their choices, and tailor their entire academic journey.
Responsibilities:
Understanding Policies and Procedures: Familiarity with university policies and procedures is essential for this role.
Academic Advising: Providing guidance and support to a diverse student population regarding educational and career goals. Establishing ongoing relationship with panel of assigned students, including, but not limited to, Zoom and/or face to face meetings minimally, twice a semester. The progression a student to successful degree completion is a major responsibility. The academic counselor is responsible to inform a student in a timely fashion if they have deviated from expected progress on their selected degree program.
Major Selection and Changes: Assisting students in selecting or changing majors by offering appropriate guidance.
Course Selection and Progress Tracking: Helping students select courses that align with degree requirements and monitoring their progress within the core and major curriculum.
Managing Schedule Changes: Assisting students with course add/drop procedures, as well as discussing implications (academic and financial) of contemplated changes.
Academic Resource Support: Facilitating student access to tutorial services and other academic resources. Assisting faculty who identify students with academic or personal issues interfering with satisfactory academic achievement to refer students for assistance with identified issues.
Facilitation and Coordination: Serving as a liaison between department chairs, faculty, and various administrative offices such as the Registrar’s Office, Admissions, Bursar, and Financial Aid.
Transfer Credits and Substitutions: Prompt evaluating of transfer course credits and the managing course substitution processes.
Student Record Management: Monitoring and updating student records to ensure accuracy.
Assisting with Academic Challenges: Supporting students facing academic challenges by presenting their cases to the Committee on Academic Standing.
Graduation Check: Completing graduation checks using tools like Degree Works to ensure students meet graduation requirements.
Student Service Orientation: Explain and assist students in dealing with other Student Services offices (bursar, registrar, and financial aid). When referral is needed, make sure to personally set up the next steps, and follow up after completed. This is a 5 day a week on campus position based at the Times Square location. During enrollment periods, Counselors may be reassigned to work at a NYSCAS peripheral site in Brooklyn, Queens, or Staten Island. At the discretion of your director, counselors may be asked to work extended hours or visit and recruit at outside locations. These requirements collectively involve guiding students through their academic journey, ensuring compliance with university standards, and serving as a vital link between students, faculty, and administrative entities.
Counselors create rapport with students using interpersonal techniques such as active listening, expressions of empathy, demonstrating positive regard and empowerment, providing clear and accurate information, using questioning, challenging, and reflecting techniques, etc. Same day responses to student emails are generally expected.
