Overview:

 

Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or charge nurse the unit secretary is responsible for receptionist duties as well as answering the dedicated physician answering service line.

Responsibilities:
Direct and help if necessary a responsible person to obtain information concerning admission.

Responsible for keeping the charge nurse informed of families requests for reports of patients.

All communication with patients and families is to be conducted in a friendly, courteous and caring manner.

Completes first portion of ER record.

Help obtain signatures for Authorization of Treatment, surgical procedures, VA transfers and declinations.

Identifies and corrects any pending departures in ED log book.

Updates and maintains house-wide Physician On-Call schedule.

Post surgeries in Operating Room log book, EEGs and Proctos.

File records after checking for completion and ER charges, proper labeling of entire record. No chart is broken down  until ER physician has written history and physical diagnosis and signed ER chart.

Answers the dedicated line for the NARMC physician answering service.

Follows policy regarding the NARMC physician answering service.

Maintains Trauma Dashboard Daily and applies any updates or changes immediately.

Ensures all Trauma Transfers are arranged through ATCC.

Maintains EmResources Reporting Deadlines.

Pages via Ascom Net page for all Trauma Activations and Code Stroke.

Communicates critical needs to ancillary departments.

Refers any problems or concerns to the unit manager.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications:
 

Required

Preferred

Education:

High School education or equivalent.

 

Experience:

Clerical Experience.

Exemplary customer service skills and phone etiquette.

Problem solving skills.

Meditech software experience

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

BLS required only if individual also provides direct patient care (i.e. CNA cross-trained as Unit secretary or vice-versa).

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must have proficient knowledge of the English language.

Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Proficient computer skills, Organizational skills, and Prioritization skills.

Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution skills.

Ability to function in extremely stressful situations.

Legible handwriting and above average spelling skills.

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
