This position will work closely with customers, engineering, quality, sales, and production to develop and qualify welding and additive manufacturing procedures and provide technical solutions for complex applications. The ideal candidate is a technically minded engineer who can work independently, communicate effectively with customers and internal teams, and apply welding codes, standards, and customer specifications to real-world manufacturing and R&D projects. This role offers the opportunity to work across multiple areas of advanced manufacturing, with direct involvement in hands-on technical problem solving, customer interaction, process development, and projects where engineering decisions directly impact customer and manufacturing outcomes. Position Responsibilities
· Develop, qualify, and document welding procedures in accordance with applicable industry standards, codes, and customer specifications.
· Develop and qualify additive manufacturing procedures as required for customer and project requirements.
· Qualify welders and welding operators in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and customer requirements.
· Review customer specifications, welding codes, industry standards, and technical requirements to determine applicable project requirements.
· Work directly with customers and their technical teams on welding parameter development, process development, and R&D projects.
· Collaborate with customers to identify appropriate materials, welding processes, and technical solutions for challenging applications.
· Evaluate and select appropriate welding procedures, processes, codes, and standards based on project requirements.
· Specify and coordinate required non-destructive examination (NDE/NDT) activities and support technical evaluation of results.
· Support Quality with technical supplier audits and other technical quality activities as needed.
· Perform and support laboratory activities related to welding evaluation, materials, NDE/NDT, and process development.
· Provide technical support to Sales during quoting and project development, particularly when projects involve new specifications, non-standard requirements, or complex technical considerations.
· Maintain technical documentation related to welding procedures, qualifications, testing, and customer requirements. Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, or a related field OR AWS Certified Welding Engineer.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in welding engineering, welding process development, manufacturing, or a related field.
• Familiarity with ASME Section IX requirements for welding procedure and welder qualification.
• Experience reviewing technical requirements, customer specifications, codes, and industry standards.
• Ability to develop, qualify, and document welding procedures.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with customers, suppliers, and cross-functional internal teams.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to develop practical technical solutions. Preferred Qualifications Candidates with one or more of the following are strongly encouraged to apply:
• Experience with NAVSEA requirements and/or naval applications.
• Experience working with Electric Boat specifications or requirements.
• Experience with metal additive manufacturing processes and applications.
• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
• Experience with welding procedure qualification and welder/operator qualification.
• Experience coordinating or evaluating NDE/NDT.
• Experience with welding R&D, parameter development, or process optimization.
• Experience working directly with customers on technical development projects.
• Experience supporting technically complex sales or quoting activities. What You’ll Do at LWS This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of welding and advanced manufacturing projects rather than focusing solely on routine production support. The Welding Engineer will have direct involvement in procedure development and qualification, customer technical discussions, R&D activities, and the development of solutions for challenging manufacturing applications. The successful candidate will work closely with Sales while maintaining a primarily technical role. Sales will retain primary responsibility for quoting, while the Welding Engineer will provide technical evaluation and guidance when projects involve new specifications, unique requirements, or complex welding and manufacturing considerations.
