Description The United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a post-bachelor's-level fellowship in biomedical/mathematical modeling of humans exposed to extreme and austere environments such as extreme cold and heat. What will I be doing? You will be part of a multi-faceted team that will be developing biomedical modeling solutions that will aid in protecting Soldiers exposed to extreme environments, including heat, cold, high-altitude, and subterranean. You will be using specialized software tools, such as COMSOL, to run and analyze different scenarios and develop guidance, design, and develop user-friendly digital tools that help Soldiers manage cold and heat stress to prevent injury and maximize performance in these austere environments. Where will I be located? Natick, Massachusetts Please note this opportunity may include some travel. What is the anticipated start date? The USARIEM is ready to make appointments effective October 2026. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Appointment Length This is initially a part-time, six-month research appointment, with the possibility of renewal for up to four additional years, depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and the participant's availability. What are the benefits? You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. S. Department of Defense. Qualifications The qualified candidate will have a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a similar discipline. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date. Additional Requirements Must be able to pass a Federal Background Check Highly competitive applicants will have the following knowledge, skills, and qualities:
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and sound skills in written and oral communication
• Advanced computer skills, including MATLAB, COMSOL, and MS Visual Studio.
• Good knowledge of 3D scanning systems, including data acquisition and data processing.
• Knowledge of basic temperature regulation, clothing, and engineering principles
• Excellent teamwork skills, who take initiative and are willing to learn new/different roles during their experience.
