Position Summary

This is a temporary part-time position, 3 hours per on Tuesdays and Thursdays, working on student attendance days, Tuesday & Thursday 3:00 - 6:00 PM. Must be elected by UO MECha to apply for position.

The GANAS Tutor supports and assist Kelly Middle School students in understanding key academic subjects and concepts through review, practice, re-framing and reteaching one-on-one or small group lessons that cater to individual student and/or group needs. Through the use of positive and constructive feedback, this position is designed to help students build robust study habits and skills intended to build student confidence and improve academic performance. A key element of this position is to help students develop bicultural leadership skills and break down barriers to higher education. Through the essential collaboration with MEChA and University of Oregon, the facilitator is the bridge and the channel to fulfill this goal.

Assignment Duties

This is not necessarily an exhaustive or all-inclusive list of responsibilities, skills, and duties associated with this position.  The supervisor of this position may modify this list at any time it’s deemed necessary.


  • Partner with GANAS Program Coordinator and Advisor to determine location, times, and subjects for tutoring sessions. Communicate concerns to the GANAS Program Coordinator/ Advisor. 
  • Create a calendar of events for the year and contact possible guest speakers. 
  • Implement cultural activities and celebrations appropriate to the Latino culture. 
  • Organize, coordinate, and supervise a number of field trips to the University of Oregon, MEChA meetings, and MEChA Regional Conference. 
  • Collaborate with students to set reasonable, achievable, and value-added goals and celebrate achievement. 
  • Work with classroom teachers to obtain rubrics, practice guides, or missing work in order to assist and support the student. 
  • Organize 2-3 parent nights through the year. 
  • Communicate regularly with parents via email and phone calls. 
  • Provide feedback to students, using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students. 
  • Promote the GANAS program with fellow MEChA students and invite them to visit regular sessions as volunteers. 
  • Asist in the cafeteria during snack at the beginning of each session. 
  • Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices or learn new tutoring techniques. 
  • During the regular GANAS sessions, participate in the daily sharing circle, assist and interact with students during the academic time. Be a role model during the cultural activities, parent nights, field trips, student presentations. 
  • Be an advocate for the GANAS Program at Kelly Middle School, before all 4j School District administrators/School Board, and any groups or institutions in the community.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

This position has the following expectations and prerequisite abilities.


  1. Present self and 4J in a professional manner including: in oral and written communication, professional disposition when working with others and maintaining professional dress standards. 
  2. Ability to communicate bilingually in English and Spanish with students and parents.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics.
  4. Establish and maintain professional boundaries and positive relationships with students and families.
  5. Ability to demonstrate creativity and flexibility in order to personalize their learning approach for individual students.
  6. Ability to effectively communicate, disseminate, and effectuate verbal or written communication and directives to a diverse group of administrators, staff, and the broader district community.  
  7. Maintain a high degree of professionalism, integrity, dependability and maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and adherence to the competent and ethical educator practices. 
  8. Promotion of equity and diversity in all settings and processes and a commitment to anti-racists principles. 
  9. Maintain compliance with state and federal laws governing all aspects of our agency including ORS, OAR, IDEA, FOIA, and CIPA. 
  10. Exceptional prioritization of tasks, timely completion of work assignments, ability to take the initiative and work independently with minimal supervision. 
  11. Demonstrates respectful, flexible and effective teambuilding skills of cooperation, communication and active participation. 
  12. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directives, find requested data and present in user-friendly formats for internal and public distribution. 
  13. Maintain regular attendance at work.  Be punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedules.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered qualified as determined by Human Resources. 


Experience

  • Participation in MeChA program at University of Oregon
