Department Overview
The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer, as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable.
Function/Duties of Position
This position will provide support of PK Research lab sample processing while following Det Norske Veritas (DNV) standards and OHSU policies regarding lab management and safety.
Some key responsibilities include:
- Specimen Processing
- Follows procedures and work practices related to collection, processing, storage, and shipment of research specimens
- Laboratory assistance
- Oversees laboratory safety and ensures that the laboratory remains in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations by supporting and enforcing PK laboratory policies and procedures
- Maintains laboratory supplies and inventory by checking and logging stock. May include management of Chemical/Biohazard and sharps inventories and disposal of such items.
- Research Kits
- Receives, unpacks, and organizes research kits.
- Works with study teams to order kits as needed. Follows lab manuals and protocols to build research kits and delivers them to appropriate locations for draws.
Required Qualifications
Education and experience:
Bachelor's in relevant field OR
Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR
4 years of relevant experience OR
Equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
- Ability to record data accurately
- Must have excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems.
- Must be proficient with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word, and PowerPoint). Typing 60wpm
- Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person
- Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with coursework in science.
- Some research knowledge with a minimum of 1-year research experience.
- 1-year experience working in a lab environment.
- Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures.
- Familiarity with laboratory techniques
- Familiarity with solutions and reagents
- Familiarity with centrifugation, aliquoting and volume measuremen
- Familiarity with medical terminology
