Becoming a Systems Administrator

Given that you are a High School Senior or an unemployed person considering a career path, this is a primer about the desire to become a Systems Administrator. This career choice offers useful financial and professional rewards. If you enjoy complex equations and formulations, there is a notable reputation you may garner, similar to figures like Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Steve Jobs. In 2009, the term Systems Administrator has grown to encompass many types of Computer Systems Administrators (SysAdmin, Systems Admin, Systems Administrators, SA, and CSA). These differing titles include many non-Systems Admins. Many of these Admins are actually Encryption Key Administrators who deal more with Operating Systems and Network Operating Systems (OS and NOS) concerning the authentication of identities within a network. Becoming a Systems Administrator There are three widely acknowledged ways to become a Systems Administrator. While some college students may find it feasible to pursue this path, it is advisable to consider alternatives. My personal experience suggests that pursuing certain options may lead to a more fruitful career. After leaving the Army in 1993, I began working at Morgan State University in the Administrative Computing Center, excelling in the IT aspect of the job. I was tasked with managing Windows NT 3.51 Advanced Server, and within a week, I had the server operational. However, my career was stunted due to the lack of Certification and academic credentials. I advise choosing paths that ensure you remain competitive in the job market. Trade Schools and Accelerated Learning Centers Surveys conducted by Network World in 2008 indicated that many IT CIOs were satisfied with Systems Administrators and Network Engineers who were certified and held at least an A.A. Degree in Computer Sciences. Thus, obtaining certification and working towards a degree is advisable for fulfillment in the Systems Administrator field. Internships are also available through various learning centers and institutions. DeVry University and ITT Institute offer modern technologies in Systems Administration and Network Engineering, providing a solid foundation for both undergraduate and graduate students. It is essential to evaluate each educational institution to find the best fit for your career aspirations. Daily Responsibilities of Systems Administrators Systems Administrators engage in various tasks throughout the day, including: Reading and researching to solve technical issues. Resolving system outages and security breaches. Maintaining and updating systems and software. Documenting system performance and issues. Here are some general principles to follow as you advance in your career: Arrive early to work. Keep personal issues separate from work. Be cautious about sharing opinions on workplace issues. Avoid workplace relationships. Provide realistic timelines for project completion. Maintain accurate records of work completed. Conduct yourself professionally at all times. Avoid inappropriate web browsing on work devices. Do not make promises you cannot keep. Never copy or take software home without permission. Being proactive and maintaining professionalism will enhance your reputation and career advancement opportunities.
