Job DescriptionGENERAL DESCRIPTIONProvides anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of an anatomic pathologist. Performs a variety of tasks including gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens and performance of postmortem examinations. Additional roles may include biobanking, pathology resident education and training, as well as administrative and supervisory responsibilities.PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIESGross description, preparation and dissection of surgical specimens of human tissuePreparations necessary for human post-mortem examinationsInstruction in anatomy and physiologyEducation in gross pathologyAnatomical photographyGross dissection skills of surgical specimensStandard autopsy techniquesParticipate in ongoing researchObtain samples used for bio-specimen bankingMay be required to perform other assigned duties, including administrative, supervisory, budgetary and teaching dutiesVALUES BASED BEHAVIORSRespect: Seek first to understandIntegrity: Do the right thingStewardship: Live leanExcellence: Be your best/Act for safety’s sakeCollaboration:Team upKindness: Create warmth and comfortMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIESKnowledge of proper specimen requirement for procedures to be performed, including tissues, fluids and patient diagnostic codesKnowledge of medical terminology, specifically Histology and CytologyWorking knowledge of main frame computers, PCs and Laboratory Information SystemsKnowledge of safety precautions for working with biohazard, chemicals and sharpsSkill in good interpersonal, oral, and written communications, good grammar and spellingAbility to maintain patient confidentiality at all timesAbility to work with precision and attention to detailAbility to demonstrate competency of relevant anatomic pathology skillsAbility to work efficiently under pressureAbility to work independently and take initiativeAbility to set priorities and use good judgmentAbility to meet organization and departmental appearance standards on the jobAbility to adapt to and work effectively with constant changeEDUCATION & EXPERIENCEBachelor's degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program or in a medical or scientific field; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basisASCP or equivalent certification requiredExperience with Sunquest, CoPath, and Dragon(voice recognition transcription) preferred. PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORSExposure to environmental, chemical and biohazards (e.g. fumes, odors, corrosives, carcinogens and infectious body fluids)Repetitive hand motions, eye strain and back fatigueExposure to “sharps”Sitting and standing for extended periods of timeManual dexterity to include bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, pipetting and reaching Visual acuity to read instruments, plot and calculate results, and distinguish colors
