In this journey-level role, you will operate a wide variety of highway equipment and tools to maintain and repair highways and highway structures, supporting the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. Under the guidance of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, you will perform skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally step into a lead role when needed. This is an opportunity to play a key part in delivering WSDOT's Strategic Plan while ensuring safe and reliable transportation across Washington State.What to ExpectThis position may require working weekends and holidays and may involve responding to emergency calls outside of scheduled hours, with a response time of 45 minutes. Employees must be prepared for emergency situations in any weather, 24/7, and may work long hours, including nights and rotational shifts. Standby and call-back may be needed occasionally.Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:Perform day-to-day highway maintenance and repair, including asphalt, concrete, drainage, signs, guardrails, and vegetation.Operate and haul materials with trucks and highway equipment to support roadway and structure maintenance.Remove litter, debris, and hazards such as danger trees, dead animals, and unlawful dwellings from the roadway and right-of-way.Conduct snow and ice control operations, including plowing snow, loading, hauling, and spreading materials to maintain safe travel.Respond to emergencies by setting up traffic control, assisting with closures, and acting as a first responder at accidents or spills.Maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment, tools, and vehicles to ensure safe and reliable operation.Document and report daily work activities while accounting for materials and inventory.Lead and train crew members in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, assigning tasks and providing instruction.QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:Highway Maintenance and Field Equipment Operation: Demonstrated ability to perform skilled outdoor work in highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or other related field environments, with proven experience operating heavy equipment and tools to safely complete roadway maintenance, repair, and field operations under varied and challenging conditions.Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:Possess a valid, unrestricted Class A CDL with "N" endorsement, no air brake restriction, and a valid Medical Card.Washington State Flagging Card and First Aid Certification, or the ability to obtain within six months of employment.Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.Ability to respond to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours callout.Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:* Pesticide Application Certification: Holds a valid Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License.* Educational Foundation: Demonstrates foundational knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.Important NotesThis recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.This position is not eligible for remote work.These positions are full-time and non-permanent, expected to last up to one year.Duties involve physical tasks outdoors in various weather conditions, including high winds, both day and night, often near high-speed traffic. Responsibilities include manual labor, machinery operation, and working in confined spaces.
