Nurse: Special Education 2025-2026

Job OverviewThe Nurse Special Education, will function as health provider and manager in the school setting and is responsible for providing supplemental school health and nursing services for specific students served with special education services.Position DescriptionEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesOperationsDevelop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans and services for children with disabilities, specifically students who are medically fragile as well as students who have health conditions that interfere with learning, including medication administration and monitoring Implement Individualized Healthcare Plans and ARD/IEPs during bus transportation as required for students with disabilities Identify, assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate student health concerns, including physical and mental health needs and injuries Conduct health assessments including screenings for health factors impacting student education including mandated screenings such as vision, hearing, scoliosis, and acanthosis Provide acuity assessments for students with disabilities to determine recommendations for ARD/IEP/health plans Maintain, evaluate, and interpret cumulative health data, including IEP related documents, to accommodate individual needs of students Coordinate, compile, and submit documentation required for local, state, and federal compliance reporting Utilize equipment and technology for the delivery of healthcare services including nursing diagnosis and treatment, documentation, presentation materials, organization and management Participate in professional development opportunities and stay up to date with current laws, trends, and best practices related to supplemental nursing and school health services Provide First Aid/CPR/AED training as needed Assist in formation of health policies, procedures, goals and objectives for the school district Provide chronic disease management and education, including ventilator care, gastrostomy feedings, tracheostomy care, catheterizations, etc., and provide student-specific training to designated personnel as needed and update training on a regular basis Assist special education teacher with IEP implementation of special education students as needed Attend ARD/IEP meetings as needed Maintain current clinical skills and competence BudgetMaintain clinic equipment including emergency equipment (i.e. AED, emergency bag)Request clinic supplies and orders for the classroom as appropriateSupervisory ResponsibilitiesNone Qualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the above essential duties satisfactorily. Associate's Degree from an accredited professional nursing education program Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing from an accredited professional nursing education program, preferred Valid Registered Nurse License from the Texas State Board of Nursing Current CPR and AED Certification Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in community health, ambulatory care, school health, or other related fields Minimum of 3 years of experience as a registered nurse preferred Demonstrated experience with the techniques of data collection for an analysis of health needs for students who are medically fragilePhysical Requirements/Working ConditionsThe work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.Additional InformationWork is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment, by may also include work while supporting students during transportation (school bus). Responsibilities require contact with sick and/or injured persons as well as children with who may have significant medical needs and may include exposure to body fluids communicable diseases and childhood illnesses. There may be exposure to potentially hazardous medical equipment and/or chemicals. Mental demands require emotional control under stress. Frequent physical activity which includes sitting, walking, standing stooping, bending, heavy lifting, restraining and/or moving up to 50 pounds using specialized medical equipment. Frequent exposure to bacteria, communicable diseases, and childhood illnesses. May also involve exposure to potentially dangerous métiers and situation that require extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Travel may be required between campuses based on the needs of the programs. Flexibility to adjust campuses based on district and campus classroom nursing needs.
