Research Scientist specializing in Carbon Materials

Description Leidos is looking for a talented and enthusiastic recent graduate to join our innovative team focusing on carbon materials research. This role provides an excellent opportunity to work on pioneering projects that have a global impact, all while being guided by leading energy experts in the field. The position is based onsite daily at the NETL campus in Pittsburgh, PA. Contribute to the development of energy technologies that have direct economic implications for the deployment of carbon resources. Key Responsibilities: Synthesize various carbon materials including graphite, graphene, porous carbons, and composites with polymers and metals. Characterize the physical and chemical properties of carbon-based materials using advanced techniques such as electron microscopy, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, and more. Evaluate electrochemical properties of new electrode materials for energy storage systems utilizing various analytical methods. Develop methods to scale up synthesis processes and innovate new techniques for producing materials from domestic carbon sources. Participate in team meetings, contribute to reports and proposals, and prepare manuscripts for publication in academic journals. Qualifications Required: Master's degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience. Hands-on expertise in carbon material synthesis, demonstrated through publication. Familiarity with characterization techniques for carbon materials. Proven ability to produce impactful research publications. A collaborative approach to solving complex scientific challenges. Ability to meet the access requirements for the NETL campus. Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Knowledge of carbon feedstocks such as coal and biomass. Experience with reactor design and processes for scaling up material production. Understanding of applications for carbon materials in energy and structural contexts.
