Boulder, United States MPOWIR Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention Full time

Overview Scientist National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is located in Boulder, Colorado. NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory (CGD) and CISL support NCARs mission with research on Earth system processes, data assimilation, and computational resources for atmospheric and geospace science. CGDs mission is to discover key climate system processes, represent understanding in models, and apply this understanding to scientific problems of societal relevance. CISL leads in supercomputing and data services to ensure access to computational resources for research and to support interdisciplinary computational science across atmospheric sciences. What You Will Do This is a joint position between CGD and CISL and will be filled at Scientist 1, 2, or 3 level, depending on the candidates skills and experience. Additional responsibilities may be assigned if hired at the higher levels. The role conducts scientific research on coupled data assimilation in support of evolving climate prediction efforts, working as part of a team and leading many aspects of coupled data assimilation, as well as contributing to related prediction and predictability analyses involving components of the Earth System. Provides high or expert level scientific, technical, and analytical knowledge. The role will advance our data assimilation framework within the Community Earth System Model and Data Assimilation Research Testbed (CESM + DART) by implementing new capabilities and assessing their impacts on data assimilation products. It will also provide coupled model diagnostics to identify the origin of coupled model biases using data assimilation. The position includes leadership and supervision of a software engineer dedicated to developing coupled data assimilation and will involve development of graphics and analysis tools. Expectations include participating in or leading (Scientist 23) proposals, leading reports and peer-reviewed papers, and presenting results regularly. Due to collaboration, the person will interact with researchers in the DART group and with developers of CESM component models (e.g., Modular Ocean Model version 6, MOM6) at GFDL, and will design, conduct, and analyze joint numerical data assimilation experiments. While broad priorities will be set in consultation with NCAR investigators, the candidate is expected to operate with a high degree of independence and to lead day-to-day activities of the projects data assimilation efforts. Responsibilities include: Serves as an expert in coupled data assimilation Lead and conduct scientific research to advance data assimilation capabilities, improve climate prediction by implementing new features, improve existing methods, and assess their impacts on results, and improve fidelity of CESM and its component models. Manage development timetable and design and implement methods/strategies toward a fully-coupled data assimilation framework. Lead, design and conduct associated sensitivity experiments. Leads the design and analysis of the data assimilation experiments Design and develop new analysis tools, including advanced statistical methods. Assess and revise the research plan as needed. Assist with the coupled prediction simulations as needed. Contribute to the analysis of prediction and predictability simulations. Provide supervision to Software Engineer developer. Leads and participates in the writing of scientific journal articles and formal reports, documenting findings Presents results at relevant meetings. Leads and participates in proposal writing. Documents experimental and diagnostics procedures Organizes and maintains a comprehensive database of simulation output and analysis. Makes this information available to collaborators. Lead contact for the broader research community on ocean data assimilation, particularly the CESM + DART framework Interacts with internal and external collaborators. What You Need (Minimum Requirements) Education and Experience Required for all Levels: Ph.D. in oceanic, atmospheric, earth sciences, mathematics, or physical sciences. #J-18808-Ljbffr
