Early Literacy Program Tutor
Position Summary
For over 45 years, Wright to Read has been providing literacy and social-emotional supports to City of Alexandria students through our flagship and Early Literacy programs. Our flagship tutor-mentor program has largely targeted Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) elementary-aged children who are at least one grade-level behind in reading by pairing students one-on-one with a volunteer tutor-mentor. Our Early Literacy Program (ELP) is designed to help at-risk kindergarten and/or first/second-grade students to read on grade level each year of the program, via high-dosage tutoring received at after-school sites during the school year. Students and families participating in the ELP program will also have an opportunity to benefit from all of the enrichment opportunities that are provided to families currently enrolled in our flagship tutoring/mentoring program. Overall, WTR provides these services for free to over 150 students each year, often reaching under-served and multi-lingual students who need the most support.
Wright to Read is looking for an enthusiastic person to serve as an ELP tutor for four-six K-Grade 2 students for the upcoming school year. Tutoring sessions will occur at Campagna Kids or Wright to Read after-school sites in ACPS elementary schools; therefore, applicants should only apply if they consistent availability between 3:00-6:00 pm on the weekdays. She/he will be able to lead students through a structured phonics-based curriculum and meet program objectives while effectively keeping the participants highly engaged. The ELP tutor will also play a crucial role in strengthening Wright to Read's relationship with the students' families, by managing communication with parents/caregivers, providing monthly updates via email, setting up individual meetings as needed, and encouraging families to attend enrichment events. This person is expected to participate in annual training/professional development opportunities and provide periodic feedback to aid us in continuous evaluation and improvement of the program.
Primary Duties:
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate literacy tutoring for each assigned student by conducting multiple tutoring sessions per week with each assigned student (schedule will be determined using beginning of year literacy assessments to determine amount of dosage each week).
- Ongoing support and communication to parents/caregivers to encourage attendance and participation and how to support literacy at home.
- Track and report on attendance, progress through curriculum, mastery test scores, student engagement, and other qualitative and quantitative measures to ensure continuous improvement on weekly basis
- Advise Wright to Read team on curricula, tools, enrichment activities and incentives utilized by the program
- As requested, help staff additional WTR enrichment events (occasional evening/weekend work requested 3-5 times a year) or attend training/professional development activities
Location and Time - Fall 2025-Spring 2026:
- ELP Tutor is required to tutor in-person at an ACPS-Campagna Kids/WTR site with general availability on the weekdays from ~2:45-5:45 (for tutoring sessions that will run 3:00-6:00 pm), starting in October 2025 through May 2026
- Expected hours are approximately 10-12 hours/week but will vary depending on enrollment/student needs. Additional work would be done remotely and could be conducted in off-business (9-5) hours
- Additional background check / training is expected to be ~20-30 hours to be completed prior to start of tutoring. Tutors will be paid for any training or administrative time spent on the program, including completion of the licensing requirements needed for Campagna Kids sites, parent outreach/communication, and attendance at Wright to Read workshops and meetings.
- This is a temporary/seasonal position with the possibility of an extension based on program needs and performance for the 26-27 academic year.
- There is the expectation that Campagna Center email will be checked on a daily basis during the week and respond to requests/questions within 2 business days.
- Please notify the Director in advance with foreseeable absence and vacation time when you will not be available.
- Please note temporary employees are only compensated for times that they are scheduled to work and are not expected to work on days that fall on school holidays/breaks, and teacher work/PD (student holiday) days. Temporary employees are not paid for sick/vacation days when they are absent but are compensated for snow/inclement weather days if scheduled to work that day.
