      Position Description

    Charles H. Barrows STEM Academy is seeking a certified Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to support the English language development and content area language and learning of Grades K-8 students identified as English Learners. Windham has a large English Learner population, and every Windham school qualifies for Bilingual Education.  Most of our English Learners are native Spanish or K'iche' speakers.

    Candidate must hold CT endorsement 111 and demonstrate knowledge and skill in ESOL teaching strategies and Sheltered Content Instruction strategies.  ESOL Teacher should be knowledgeable about CT identification and placement procedures, parent notification, annual assessment, and testing accommodations practices.  Teacher should demonstrate familiarity with types of ESOL instruction, service delivery models, and collaboration with both general education classroom teachers and specialists.

    Essential Functions:
    • Adhere to the Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility
    • Ensures the safety of students
    • Implements the Windham Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations, and directives
    • Manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain an advantageous learning environment.
    • Prepares lesson plans that achieve clear objectives, uses appropriate techniques, and serves the needs of all learners in the classroom
    • Maintains accurate and complete records as required
    • Attends parent/teacher conferences
    • Assess student learning continually and identify areas of intervention if needed.
    • Follow the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Windham Board of Education.
    • Maintains respect for confidential information
    • Keeps parents up-to-date on student progress through the use of interim reports, report cards, and/or conferences
    • Design instruction to meet the needs of all students through both individual and small group settings as needed
    • Design clear and specific learning assessments.
    • Maintain a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and learner.
    • Maintain a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior.
    • Maintain ongoing communication with parents
    • Other duties as assigned by Administrator and/or Superintendent
    Other Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other educational materials
    • Establish and maintain professional relationships
    • Participate in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve instructional practice and positively affect student achievement.
    Qualifications/Certificates:
    • Bilingual(Spanish/English) preferred.
    • Active subject matter certificate as required by the Connecticut State Department of Education
    • CSDE Certification(s):  111 (PK-12) or any gradeappropriate bilingual endorsement
    • Experience working with a diverse student demographic
    • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Windham Board of Education may find appropriate

    Days:    Monday – Friday
    Salary:  In accordance with the WFT contract
