Job Description Summary:

The Department of Anthropology at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in linguistic anthropology. Appointment will begin August 10, 2026. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in linguistic anthropology whose work engages with Indigenous communities in the U.S. Comparative perspectives that reach beyond the boundaries of the contemporary U.S. are welcome.

Duties include research, teaching, and service to the department and the university. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body as well as Master's and Ph.D. students.  

Teaching expectation is two courses per semester. Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling introductory and thematic undergraduate courses in linguistic anthropology serving both general education and major requirements, and to contribute courses to the Native Studies minor. The candidate will also be expected to teach upper division and graduate courses in their area(s) of specialization and to contribute to the work of the American Indian Research Center (AIRC).

Required Qualifications:
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology, Linguistics, Native Studies, or a closely related field at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2026).
  • Applicants must show evidence of skills for teaching and mentoring students in linguistic anthropology and the Native Studies minor; an active research program; evidence of engagement with Indigenous communities; and demonstrated potential as a scholar.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Applicants with previous experience teaching and mentoring students; evidence of scholarly achievement; and ability to contribute to the mission of the AIRC, including work with tribal partners interested in language documentation and revitalization, are preferred.
