Position SummaryThe Concertmaster, as first chair of the Violin section, holds a position of leadership for the orchestra and assists the Conductor in all facets of Greenspring Valley Orchestra ( GVO ) programming including planning and overseeing activities, rehearsals, and performances in accordance with School of Design, Arts and Communication, and University strategies, policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to assisting with planning, preparing for and managing rehearsals and performances; assisting with recruiting, training, and mentoring students and an all-volunteer community orchestra.
Essential Functions
Support and advocate for Conductor's planned yearly music program, working in partnership with orchestra members to generate excitement, build the reputation of the Orchestra, and grow audiences. Attend and assist with all scheduled orchestra rehearsals and concerts, and lead string sectionals as needed. Communicate effectively and professionally with orchestra members, students, colleagues, professionals, administrators, and community partners. Collaborate with the conductor to actively recruit and onboard new members of the orchestra. Demonstrate effective string pedagogy, including proper teaching methods and playing techniques for all string instruments. Assist and collaborate with conductor regarding music and part preparation, including: bowings, rehearsal letters or numbers, and measure numbers coordinated between the conductor's score and players' parts. Editing of tempos, dynamics, articulations, inserts, and cuts may be required. Adhere to all university policies and procedures, including timely completion of timecards, completion of required trainings, and prompt, professional communication using official university email account.
