About the role

We are looking for an experienced & detail-oriented Controller to lead our accounting team. This role involves preparing and analyzing financial reports, overseeing monthly closes, and managing accounts payable and receivable. Experience with ERP systems and a strong understanding of financial policies and procedures are essential. The Controller is responsible for supervising accounting staff & plays a key role in ensuring the organization's financial health and operational effectiveness while maintaining industry best practices.
Work Location: This position will report to the Chief Financial Officer. This role requires Mon – Thurs in person at our Downtown Sarasota office with the option to work from home on Friday. 

What you'll do

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze financial reports, such as income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. Ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Monthly Close: Prepare monthly closing journal entries using the Balance Sheet Reconciliation file to ensure GAAP compliance. Review and analyze discrepancies; prepare and present final trial balance for FP&A.
  • Order Processing: Oversee order processing staff. Ensure processes are efficient and documented.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Develop annual budgets and financial forecasts in coordination with company leadership. Monitor actual performance against budget and forecast, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions as needed.
  • Accounts Payable and Receivable: Oversee accounts payable processes, including invoice processing, payment approvals, and vendor management. Manage accounts receivable, ensuring timely invoicing and collections.
  • Payroll Administration: Coordinate payroll processing, including employee compensation, tax withholding, and benefits administration. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and timely payment to employees.
  • Tax Compliance: Ensure compliance with tax regulations at the federal, state, and local levels. Prepare and file required tax returns, such as income tax, sales tax, and payroll tax filings.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making, such as pricing strategies, cost reduction initiatives, and investment opportunities. Provide insights into the financial performance of different business units or projects.
  • Internal Controls: Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial transactions. Identify areas for process improvements and implement best practices in accounting operations.
  • Audit Preparation: Coordinate with external auditors for annual financial audits or reviews. Prepare audit schedules, provide requested documentation, and address audit findings or recommendations.
  • Financial Policies and Procedures: Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures to ensure consistency, transparency, and compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Team Management: Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance on day-to-day tasks, professional development, and performance evaluations.
  • ERP System Management: Oversee the company's ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system, ensuring data integrity, system updates, and user training to support efficient accounting operations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years of full cycle accounting experience and at least 2 years in public accounting/audit
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA, CMA or MBA a plus
  • Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. Sage Intacct, QuickBooks) and advanced Excel skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ethical Standards: Demonstrated commitment to ethical practices and maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive financial information
  • Experience in Software and/or Professional Services industries preferred
  • Experience with Connect Wise and Maxio/SaaS Optics a plus
